XCharge North America and OUC Join Forces for EV Charging Research
Kyle, Texas – XCharge North America (XCharge NA), known for its advanced direct current fast charging (DCFC) and battery-integrated electric vehicle (EV) solutions, has teamed up with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One). The partnership aims to install the innovative Net Zero Series (NZS) charger at OUC's Grid Integration Laboratory (GIL), situated within the OUC Gardenia Innovation & Operations Center. This strategic collaboration intends to investigate how resilient charging solutions can bolster the stability of the electrical grid while lowering operational costs.
Addressing Rising Demand for EV Charging
As energy requirements escalate alongside the surge in registered electric vehicles (EVs) and travelers, OUC recognizes the urgent need for dependable charging solutions. These solutions will support customer demands while reducing the operational challenges faced by utilities. Under a one-year research agreement with an extension option, OUC plans to utilize the NZS unit to examine its battery-integrated system and capabilities, effectively tackling challenges presented by a demanding operational environment.
Traditional DCFC setups often necessitate expensive infrastructure enhancements like new wiring and transformers to accommodate the growing demand for EV charging. OUC seeks to minimize these costs through the NZS’s design, which limits the maximum power drawn from the grid. Specifically, the NZS can deliver a maximum output of 194 kW while operating on an existing 60-amp breaker, allowing OUC to charge a Ford F-150 Lightning from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes while significantly decreasing the grid's demand impact.
Innovative Solutions for Electricity Management
Paul Brooker, OUC's Manager of Emerging Technologies, expressed the organization’s goal: “As we expand OUC’s network of EV charging stations, we actively seek solutions that can be integrated within existing infrastructure, thereby boosting efficiency and reducing costs.” He emphasized the encouragement found in XCharge North America's commitment to innovative demand response features that enable efficient electricity management during peak periods. Notably, the NZS opens opportunities for applications like microgrids that can provide vital backup energy to critical services during emergencies, demonstrating the potential of this collaboration in enhancing grid reliability.
“Working together with OUC marks a significant advancement in our aim to develop EV solutions that benefit drivers and enhance grid reliability,” stated Alex Urist, Vice President of XCharge NA. He remarked on the excitement surrounding the collaboration and anticipates that OUC will effectively utilize the NZS’s bidirectional capabilities to improve the grid's performance, particularly under the pressure of mobility demands and adverse weather conditions. The NZS stands out as both a backup energy storage unit and an efficient charging station, crucial for the growth of microgrids within the Orlando area.
Transforming EV Charging and Grid Interactions
The NZS is designed for adaptability, accommodating various configurations while ensuring higher output without overwhelming the grid. It features a robust 233-kWh battery pack capable of delivering 189 kW of DC fast charging. This dual function not only supports rapid EV charging but also contributes to grid stability by permitting operators to return surplus energy to the grid during off-peak times. As such, it plays an essential role in electrifying America’s transportation network and transitioning to a sustainable, resilient energy infrastructure.
