Celebrating 15 Years of Empowering Literacy for All
Celebrating 15 Years of World Read Aloud Day
World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) is back and it's a special moment as we commemorate its 15th anniversary. Launched by LitWorld, this event has transformed into a global movement uniting readers, educators, and book enthusiasts alike to share the magic of storytelling. This year, WRAD falls on the first Wednesday of February, inviting everyone to participate in embracing the power of reading aloud.
The Vision Behind WRAD
"Fifteen years ago, our aim was to celebrate the joy of storytelling while emphasizing that literacy is a fundamental human right," stated Caitlin Cassaro, Executive Director of LitWorld. This day serves as a powerful reminder that every voice is vital, and each story deserves an audience. As we mark this milestone, we recognize the role of storytelling in connecting us, empowering communities, and fostering lifelong learning.
Supporting Local Communities
This year, LitWorld and Scholastic are making a significant impact by delivering 4,000 books to local bookstores in Los Angeles. These bookstores are essential to their communities, providing gathering spaces where stories come alive. In collaboration with local gems like Children’s Book World, Zibby’s Bookshop, Diesel, and Vroman’s Bookstore, families affected by wildfires are encouraged to visit and pick up free books to restore their collections, celebrating the joy of reading together.
Events Around the Globe
Alongside these local initiatives, WRAD festivities will occur worldwide, with LitWorld supporting events in its home city. New Yorkers can enjoy special gatherings at Greenlight Bookstore and The Brooklyn Public Library. It's an opportunity to immerse in readings by talented children’s authors and engage in creative activities that highlight the importance of storytelling.
Engaging with Authors
To add excitement to this year's celebrations, Storyvoice, Scholastic's platform for live author events, will host interactive shows featuring renowned authors like David Shannon and Joanna Ho. These virtual events are designed for kids and classrooms, allowing participants to read, draw, and connect with their favorite storytellers.
Join the Movement
LitWorld invites everyone to become a WRADvocate. By joining this initiative, individuals can pledge their support for literacy and become part of a global community dedicated to providing every child with the resources and opportunities necessary for success. Becoming an advocate is easy and fulfilling!
LitChats Series and Resources
This anniversary is also marked by the launch of a special WRAD edition of LitChats, where thought leaders share insights on fostering meaningful digital communities through reading aloud. This series is a fantastic resource for educators and parents wanting to enhance their literacy initiatives.
A Year-Long Celebration of Literacy
The launch of WRAD on February 5 marks the beginning of a year-long focus on promoting literacy as a universal right. LitWorld will host various events, offer resources, and highlight inspiring stories to underscore the importance of reading aloud. Communities are encouraged to organize their own events, share stories, and spread the word about literacy's significance. Use hashtags like #WorldReadAloudDay and #WRAD2025 to join in.
This 15th-anniversary celebration is made possible by generous sponsors including Scholastic, Outskirts Press, and Penguin Random House. Together, we're building a brighter future where every child has access to the magic of stories.
