Bodega Amalaya's Exciting New Era Under Alejandro Pepa
A New Chapter for Innovative Salta Winery
Bodega Amalaya is thrilled to share the announcement of Alejandro Pepa as its new Head of Winemaking and Operations, effective immediately. Known for his significant contributions to Argentine winemaking, Pepa's extensive experience and deep connection to the Calchaquí Valley will enhance Amalaya's reputation as a leading producer of Salta wines. His passion and dedication to creating exceptional high-altitude blends from sustainably sourced grapes will further elevate the quality of wines at Amalaya.
A Journey of Expertise and Creative Vision
A Career Rooted in Innovation and Terroir
Originally from Mendoza, Alejandro Pepa completed his studies in Oenology and Horticultural Industries at the Don Bosco Faculty. His journey in winemaking has taken him across illustrious wine regions in France, the United States, Canada, and Asia, with notable harvests in Napa Valley and Languedoc-Roussillon.
Pepa's career spans over two decades, primarily at Bodega El Esteco, a member of Grupo Peñaflor. There, he advanced from the Laboratory and Quality Control Manager to the Head Winemaker for the Calchaquí Valleys, overseeing operations in key regions like Cafayate and Chañar Punco.
Since moving to Cafayate in the 1990s, Pepa has played a crucial role in enhancing the reputation of northern Argentine wines. His endeavors to modernize traditional varieties, particularly Torrontés, and his influence on Calchaquí reds have garnered widespread acclaim, establishing global recognition for the region.
Shaping the Future of Amalaya
Driving Amalaya's Future
As Alejandro takes on his new responsibilities, he will oversee all aspects of winemaking and production, working closely with the existing team, including Winemaker Jorge Noguera and Head of Production Juan Bautista Grenier. His leadership will be instrumental in continuing to uphold Amalaya's standards of quality and innovative practices.
This strategic move also allows Thibaut Delmotte, Winemaker at Bodega Colomé, to concentrate on Colomé’s unique projects. Each winery in Grupo Colomé will benefit from focused leadership and a clear vision for development.
"Alejandro Pepa's appointment marks a pivotal moment for Amalaya, confirming our dedication to continuous growth and our mission to produce wines that capture the essence of the Calchaquí Valley," remarked Manuel Lanús, CEO of Grupo Colomé. "His notable achievements and inspiring leadership will undoubtedly influence our winery’s future. We are delighted to welcome someone who exemplifies the principles instilled by our founder Donald Hess, which remain integral to our mission to showcase Salta's wines to the world."
A Vision for Quality and Sustainability
A Word from the Winemaker
"What attracted me to Amalaya is its harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, coupled with a deep respect for nature," stated Alejandro Pepa. "In my role, I am committed to honoring the outstanding fruit from these remarkable high-altitude vineyards and creating wines that reflect their inherent purity and character. Amalaya's long-standing dedication to sustainability ensures that each bottle not only celebrates the uniqueness of Cafayate but also embodies our responsibility to protect these precious resources for generations to come."
About Bodega Amalaya
Founded in 2010 in Cafayate, at the heart of the Calchaquí Valley, Bodega Amalaya represents the vision of Larissa and Christoph Ehrbar, heirs of the late Donald Hess, a pioneering vintner. The name Amalaya, derived from the local indigenous language, translates to "hope for a miracle." This phrase encapsulated Hess’s joy upon discovering water in this extreme environment, enabling the cultivation of vines in soil that had remained untouched for centuries.
Today, Amalaya manages two distinct vineyards: San Isidro, located at the base of the mountain of the same name, and Las Mercedes, located just outside Cafayate on the route to San Carlos. These vineyards, with elevations around 1,700 meters, benefit from a dry climate, significant temperature variations, and rocky, sandy soils, resulting in wines characterized by vibrancy and distinctive qualities.
Amalaya’s diverse portfolio includes high-altitude blends of Malbec and Torrontés, lighter wines with reduced alcohol content, along with their Exceptional Blends collection and limited single-vineyard offerings. Each wine reflects a commitment to innovation and sustainability while honoring the essence of Cafayate's terroir.
