Awareness Initiatives for Rail Safety Week by CN Police

Rail Safety Week Campaign Unveiled by CN Police
MONTREAL — CN (NASDAQ: CNI) today officially kicked off its annual Rail Safety Week. This vital initiative aims to raise awareness about the potential dangers associated with unsafe behaviors around railway tracks and properties.
Partnerships for Community Engagement
From the 15th to the 19th, CN Police Services, along with dedicated CN employees, are joining forces with various cities, towns, and Indigenous communities throughout North America. The purpose of these collaborations is to illuminate the significant risks that come with trespassing and ignoring signals at railway crossings. Such actions can lead to tragic consequences that affect numerous lives.
Inspiring Safe Choices
Shawn Will, the Chief of Police and Chief Security Officer at CN, emphasized, "Rail safety isn’t just about notable incidents; it’s primarily about the small, safe decisions we make daily. By respecting the signs and signals around tracks, we play our part in keeping our communities safer. Rail safety must be a collective effort, where together, we can protect lives."
The Need for Continued Education
The statistics are alarming: North America experiences over 2,000 crossing accidents and approximately 1,000 trespassing incidents each year. In Canada alone, the previous year indicated 261 of these incidents, leading to 68 fatalities and 58 severe injuries. These figures highlight the urgent necessity for ongoing educational efforts and increased public awareness.
Promoting Safe Practices
Rail safety is a shared responsibility that requires active participation from communities throughout CN’s vast network. In the preceding year, more than 376 municipalities formally recognized Rail Safety Week by passing resolutions and proclamations to support this crucial initiative. For more than twenty years, CN has been a steadfast advocate for safety awareness but acknowledges that this is a community-wide commitment.
Community Involvement in Rail Safety
By actively engaging the public and providing education on the risks associated with trespassing and unsafe behaviors, we can collectively help avert tragedies and save lives. CN extends a warm invitation to all community partners to join in spreading the essential message that rail safety is imperative, and together, we can make a substantial difference.
Insights into CN Police Services
Each year, CN Police Services respond to numerous incidents occurring along the extensive CN network, which covers eight Canadian provinces and 16 U.S. states. Their role is not limited to protecting CN property; the officers also provide rail safety presentations to schools, trucking agencies, bus operators, and community organizations. By implementing strategic educational initiatives and conducting targeted operations, CNPS aims to foster a culture of safe practices and elevate public consciousness regarding the importance of rail safety. Their vision is to establish CN as the safest railroad in North America.
