LG Energy Solution's Sustainable Battery Recycling Vision

LG Energy Solution's Sustainable Battery Recycling Vision

LG Energy Solution Advances Battery Recycling Initiatives

LG Energy Solution has joined forces with Derichebourg, a leader in metal waste recycling, to create an advanced battery recycling joint venture. This collaboration is pivotal in establishing a sustainable closed-loop system aimed at transforming the recycling landscape in Europe.

Construction Plans and Facility Details

Set to break ground in 2026 in Bruyères-sur-Oise, this state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to begin operations by 2027. It will focus on the pre-processing of battery materials, which includes the crucial steps of discharging, dismantling, and shredding battery scrap generated during production. Additionally, the facility will play a vital role in collecting end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Capacity and Processing Innovations

When fully operational, the plant will boast a remarkable processing capacity exceeding 20,000 tons of batteries annually. The black mass extracted will undergo sophisticated post-processing to reclaim essential raw materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt. These reclaimed materials will be reintegrated into LG Energy Solution’s battery production, thereby fortifying the company’s supply chains.

Joint Ventures and Material Sourcing

As part of the joint venture, LG Energy Solution is set to supply battery scrap from its manufacturing facility in Poland, while Derichebourg will collect end-of-life batteries from France and its neighboring countries. This strategic partnership is designed to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy, emphasizing the importance of resource sustainability.

Regulatory Alignment and Future Goals

This collaboration aligns with the EU Battery Regulation aimed at ensuring a minimum level of recycled content in batteries sold in Europe starting in 2031. By proactively engaging in this partnership, LG Energy Solution and Derichebourg are positioning themselves to effectively meet and exceed upcoming regulatory requirements. Furthermore, the initiative supports automotive manufacturers seeking to integrate closed-loop recycling systems within their operations.

Enhancing Competitive Edge through Partnership

Derichebourg operates more than 200 collection sites across France, with a global presence comprising over 285 sites. Both companies are committed to deepening their strategic collaboration, enhancing their capabilities in the battery recycling market, and solidifying their competitive edge.

Leadership Insights

"This collaboration enables us to secure a stable and cost-competitive supply of recycled battery materials from the advanced processing of end-of-life batteries and battery scrap," stated Chang Beom Kang, the Chief Strategy Officer of LG Energy Solution. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the value offered to customers within the recycling sector.

Abderrahmane El Aoufir, CEO of Derichebourg, expressed, "This partnership fully supports our ambition to develop industrial solutions with a high environmental added value, while strengthening the local roots of our activities."
