Final Step to Achieving 'Dream OLED'
LG Display has made a significant leap in display technology by becoming the first company to verify the commercialization-level performance of blue phosphorescent OLED panels on a mass production line. This breakthrough follows an eight-month collaboration with UDC, marking a pivotal moment in the journey towards achieving the highly sought-after 'dream OLED'.
Understanding 'Dream OLED'
In the world of displays, 'dream OLED' signifies an OLED panel that can utilize phosphorescence for all three primary colors: red, green, and blue. The method of light emission in OLED panels is divided into fluorescence and phosphorescence. Fluorescence allows light to emit instantly upon receiving an electric charge but has a low luminous efficiency of about 25%. On the other hand, phosphorescence involves a storage phase for electrical energy before light emission, resulting in a stellar luminous efficiency of 100% and requiring significantly less power.
The Challenge of Blue Phosphorescence
Since the commercialization of red and green phosphorescence began over two decades ago, achieving blue phosphorescence has been particularly challenging. This is mainly due to blue's shorter wavelength, which necessitates a higher energy input.
Innovative Hybrid Two-Stack Tandem OLED Structure
LG Display has tackled this challenge head-on by developing a hybrid two-stack Tandem OLED structure. This innovative design incorporates blue fluorescence in the lower layer and blue phosphorescence in the upper layer. The integration of these technologies results in a power consumption reduction of about 15% while maintaining a similar level of stability compared to existing OLED panels.
By becoming the first to reach commercialization of blue phosphorescent OLED panels, LG Display has validated performance, optical characteristics, and processability through real mass production tests, achieving this milestone in partnership with UDC.
Patent Innovations and Future Showcases
LG Display has filed independent patents in both South Korea and the United States for its groundbreaking hybrid blue phosphorescent OLED technology. This innovative technology will be showcased at SID Display Week 2025, one of the largest display exhibitions in the world, where LG Display will present a blue phosphorescent OLED panel configured for small and medium-sized devices, including smartphones and tablets. Amid the rise in demand for high-definition, energy-efficient products like AI-driven PCs and AR/VR devices, the application of blue phosphorescence technology is expected to accelerate.
