Armas previously served as the head coach of the Colorado Rapids, leading them back to the MLS playoffs and achieving notable success in recent seasons. His tenure includes a strong third-place finish in the 2025 Leagues Cup and consecutive victories in the Rocky Mountain Cup.
Beginning his coaching career in 2008, Armas first contributed as an assistant for Chicago Fire FC. He later took the reins as head women's soccer coach at Adelphi University, where he significantly raised the team's profile and achieved notable NCAA Tournament appearances. His leadership at Adelphi earned him accolades like the United Soccer Coaches Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.
In 2015, Armas joined the New York Red Bulls as an assistant coach. The team clinched the 2015 Supporters' Shield under his guidance, and he took over as head coach in 2018. That season, he led the Red Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals and secured another Supporters' Shield victory.

He amassed 12 goals and 48 assists over 264 matches while securing multiple titles, including the MLS Cup and four U.S. Open Cups.
Beyond his club success, Armas was a pivotal figure for the United States Men's National Team, earning 66 caps and contributing two goals. He participated in crucial World Cup qualifying campaigns and achieved individual recognition as U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year.
