Journalists Voice Concerns Over AI Impact on Journalism

Growing Concerns Among Journalists About AI and Social Media

A recent survey of over 500 journalists has ignited a discourse on the evolving landscape of journalism, raising alarms about the increasing influence of generative AI and the fragmentation of news sources fueled by social media.

As Australia gears up for its Federal Election, the apprehensions within the journalistic community are particularly pronounced, indicating a critical moment for the future of media.

The State of AI Usage and Its Implications

The Medianet 2025 Media Landscape Report reveals that 63% of journalists have yet to adopt AI tools in their work. While there has been a slight uptick in usage, the specter of generative AI casts a long shadow with 88% of respondents voicing concerns about its potential threat to journalistic integrity and job security. Alarmingly, 16% reported job losses linked to the rise of AI.

Disinformation and fake news have been identified as leading threats to public interest journalism, with many journalists anxiously anticipating the closures of media outlets—a concern that has surged nearly 25% since the previous year. Furthermore, nearly half of the respondents view AI itself as a significant risk.

Medianet’s Managing Director, Amrita Sidhu, notes, “Though some journalists see the inevitability of these changes, most are finding it difficult to adapt and fear what these shifts mean for their industry and society at large.”

Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword

The survey underscores journalists' complex relationship with social media. While 70% utilize these platforms as sources, 67% of them worry that social media also amplifies misinformation and creates echo chambers. Among the platforms, Facebook remains the most preferred choice for professional purposes, followed closely by Instagram and LinkedIn. Notably, usage of Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, has plummeted, falling from 69% in the previous year to just 48% this year, reflecting a significant decline in its perceived reliability.

Emerging platforms like Bluesky, however, show promise, with its usage doubling to 19% in a single year. This growth suggests that journalists are increasingly searching for alternatives in the constantly evolving digital landscape.

Trust in Journalism: A Declining Factor

The survey highlights a troubling trend: diminished trust in media. A considerable portion of journalists attribute this decline to the fragmentation of news and the overabundance of misinformation. Additionally, 28% admit their reporting may not be entirely free from bias, which raises further questions about the integrity of journalistic practices.

Amrita Sidhu expresses concern that “this year's report spotlights the considerable pressures on Australian journalists. They are confronted with trust issues and technology's role, all while navigating a demanding media landscape.”

The Challenges Ahead

Financial issues dominate the challenges faced by journalists, with 67% considering themselves underpaid. This sentiment is echoed throughout the industry where ongoing pressures from disinformation and potential attrition within media outlets are paramount. A staggering 75% of respondents indicated that disinformation threatens public interest journalism, presenting a moral and professional crisis as they approach the next election cycle.

Employment Landscape and Adaptability

The employment scenario in journalism is shifting, with a significant 65% working full-time while others opt for freelance or part-time roles. Yet, 42% have experienced changes in their job functions, including shifts to new positions or beginning side projects to diversify their income streams.

This adaptability reflects the industry's need to innovate and evolve, embracing various platforms to maintain relevancy in a fast-paced environment. Despite these shifts, financial stability remains an ongoing concern.

The survey clearly indicates that the media's future lies at a crossroads. The mounting pressure from generative AI, social media misinformation, and economic uncertainties signifies a pivotal moment for journalists who must navigate these turbulent waters to safeguard the values of truth and integrity.
