Advanced Protocols for Body Armor Comfort and Mobility
DuPont has introduced groundbreaking testing protocols following a collaboration with Hohenstein, a renowned textile research institute. These protocols set a new standard for assessing the comfort and mobility of soft ballistic body armor, which is crucial for law enforcement and military personnel.
Comfort is a significant concern for officers on duty. Often, a lack of comfort is cited as a primary reason for removing body armor while working. In addition, restricted mobility can lead to fatigue, thus diminishing focus and slowing reactions, increasing the likelihood of injuries.
Christophe Djololian, the Global Market Development Leader at DuPont, emphasized the necessity of maximizing comfort and mobility. He stated, "Understanding body movement and specific scenarios that personnel face is key to evaluating how comfortable and flexible body armor can be. This new approach aims to objectively assess practical discomfort and mobility limitations, enhancing both performance and safety for users."
Introducing the Comfort and Mobility Tests
DuPont and Hohenstein developed three innovative tests to enhance the evaluation of comfort and mobility for body armor:
1. Lower Costal Bending (LCB) Test
The LCB test is designed to simulate common upper body bending motions. It examines energy loss due to the stiffness of armor, which can lead to quicker fatigue during active duty.
2. Double Curvature Compression (DCC) Test
This test assesses how well ballistic materials conform to the complex curves of a bent torso. High levels of conformability directly correlate to improved freedom of movement, integral for operational effectiveness.
3. Edge Pressure (EP) Test
The EP test looks at localized pressure points at the edges of vests, including areas like the lower abdomen, neck, and arms. These pressure points are often significant sources of discomfort for users.
Collaboration with Hohenstein for Superior Testing Methods
The collaboration with Hohenstein was pivotal in creating these testing methods. Dr. Jan Beringer, Senior Scientific Expert at Hohenstein noted, "Our goal at Hohenstein is to resonate as closely as possible with the user's experience. Through dedicated wear trials, we could pinpoint discomfort and limitations in movement. Utilizing our extensive expertise, we crafted tests that effectively replicate a wearer's experience alongside DuPont."
Steven LaGanke, DuPont’s Global Segment Leader added, "We are committed to pushing the boundaries of body armor comfort. The new testing protocols we developed with Hohenstein allow us to quantitatively assess and standardize flexibility in body armor, ensuring that comfort and protection work together. The development of flexible materials, such as Kevlar® EXO™ fabrics, opens up a range of optimized solutions for end-users."
Accessing the New Testing Protocols
