Innovative Teams Shine in Global Wildfire Challenge Recognition

OAKLAND, Calif. – Conservation X Labs (CXL) proudly announced the results of its Fire Grand Challenge, a dynamic competition aimed at fostering innovative solutions for wildfire mitigation, response, and landscape recovery. The event showcased impressive talent from across the globe, culminating in three outstanding teams being awarded a combined prize of $200,000 to further develop their groundbreaking projects.

A Remarkable Outreach

The Fire Grand Challenge attracted over 140 applications from 20 countries, demonstrating the growing concern and proactive initiatives for wildfire management on a global scale. Twelve finalist teams were selected, each forming a partnership between technical innovators and local community experts. This collaboration aimed to ensure that solutions leverage both cutting-edge technology and local knowledge.

Real-World Trials

Each finalist team was granted a $50,000 field-testing grant to help them validate their solutions in real-world conditions. Over a nine-month period, teams collaborated with land managers, fire experts, and local community partners. Their efforts included controlled burns, flight trials, and rigorous technical assessments across diverse fire-prone landscapes from the forests of British Columbia to the diverse ecosystems of Chiapas, Mexico.

Recognizing Victorious Teams

The winners of the Fire Grand Challenge were celebrated for their exceptional contributions to fire management strategies:

Grand Prize Winner: Vibrant Planet Data Commons (Colorado, USA) & The Kalispel Tribe of Indians (Washington, USA). This team developed an AI-powered decision support tool meant to assist community planning for fire mitigation and restoration, showcasing deep collaboration with Tribal Nations.

Runner-Up: International Savanna Fire Management Initiative (Victoria, AUS) & BIOMASA AC (Chiapas, MEX). Their approach, Emissions Reduction Traditional Fire Management (ERTFM), employs early dry season burns by leveraging geospatial information systems (GIS) alongside local knowledge to mitigate destructive burns during the late dry season.

Runner-Up: Flash Forest Inc. (Ontario, CAN) & Grand County Wildfire Council (Colorado, USA). This team introduced an innovative forest regeneration technology utilizing drones to distribute seed pods for replanting—an exciting marriage of AI and environmental recovery.

Connecting the Dots

The winners were unveiled at the Solutions Summit, the culmination event of the Challenge held at the Oakland Museum of California. This gathering was a fantastic opportunity for leaders in wildfire management and innovation technology to come together and share insights, while discussing pathways for large-scale deployment of the solutions.

An Important Initiative

The success of the Fire Grand Challenge is significantly attributed to a coalition of partners dedicated to wildfire management, including the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Esri, and Planet. Their support demonstrates a collective commitment to addressing the escalating challenges posed by wildfires globally.
