Innovative Strategies for Advancing Tire Recycling and Sustainability

Innovative Strategies for Advancing Tire Recycling and Sustainability

American Tire Recycling Progress Report

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) has recently shared insights from its 16th End-of-Life Tire Management Report, revealing that sustainable practices in tire recycling are yielding remarkable results. Currently, an impressive 79% of end-of-life tires are being put to good use in various markets. This statistic marks a 10.5% increase, solidifying the status of tires as one of the most effectively reclaimed consumer products, outstripping recycling rates seen in materials such as glass and plastic.

Importance of Collaboration in Tire Recycling

Despite these positive trends, USTMA emphasizes the necessity for ongoing collaboration among all stakeholders in the tire recycling ecosystem. There is a pressing need to address illegal and abandoned tire stockpiles, enhancing the overall sustainability of tire recycling initiatives.

Anne Forristall Luke, the president and CEO of USTMA, emphasized the significance of collaboration: “Achieving a target of recycling 100% of end-of-life tires into sustainable markets remains our ultimate goal. While we've seen more than a 95% decrease in stockpiles due to decades of progress and innovative practices, continued partnerships with manufacturers, recyclers, and advocacy groups are needed to fully realize circularity.”

Emerging Markets and Ground Rubber Usage

The development of ground rubber as a market has taken center stage, now accounting for the second-largest application for end-of-life tires, with a remarkable 29% increase since 2019. Ground rubber finds its way into numerous applications, notably within the paving industry in the form of rubberized asphalt. This surge reflects society's growing demand for environmentally friendly materials in both infrastructure and daily products.

Rubber Modified Asphalt Growth

Within this sphere, Rubber Modified Asphalt (RMA) usage is accelerating as a highly durable solution for American infrastructure. In the recent two years, 165,000 tons of end-of-life tires have been utilized in RMA applications. USTMA advocates for increased federal investment to bolster RMA projects, emphasizing the long-term advantages, performance benefits, and the overall positive environmental impact they deliver.

Targeting Tire Stockpiles through Engagement

Even with substantial progress, significant challenges remain. Currently, around 48 million end-of-life tires are still idly stockpiled. USTMA is actively engaging every player in the tire recycling value chain to advocate for sustainability and eliminate these stockpiles. An initiative, the Tire Recycling Foundation (TRF), was created to furnish essential support by fostering education and collaboration among key entities within the recycling landscape.

Continued Industry Advocacy

“While we’ve made strides, we cannot afford to slow our efforts,” Luke mentions. “There remains a pressing need for industry leaders, policymakers, and recyclers to collectively champion market development and invest in the sustainable practices necessary to ensure that all tires are recycled and transformed into viable products.”

Strategic Areas of Focus for USTMA

Aligned with the insights from its recent report, USTMA and collaborators intend to pursue four pivotal areas for ongoing growth:

1. Market Growth through Research and Data

Building on previous reports, USTMA is set to unveil a Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) State of Knowledge Report aimed at fostering market development and driving innovation.

2. Enhancing Collaborative Engagement

USTMA will persist in enhancing partnerships with all sectors involved—including manufacturers, recyclers, and government agencies—through initiatives like the Tire Recycling Conference, promoting knowledge sharing and advancement in tire recycling practices.

3. Leveraging Federal Infrastructure Opportunities

USTMA aspires to capitalize on opportunities from existing federal infrastructure funding to expand TDA and RMA markets, further cementing the role of recycled tires in sustainable American infrastructure.

4. Advocating State Programs for Tire Management

A continued emphasis will be placed on robust state-level programs that efficiently handle end-of-life tires while promoting innovative recycling methods aimed at reducing stockpiles.
