Innovative Space Project Aims to Enhance Orbital Monitoring

Innovative Space Monitoring Project

An exciting project to monitor and protect the Earth’s orbital environment is currently being developed by the University of Manitoba (UM) and Magellan Aerospace, in partnership with Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) and the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). This collaboration aims to enhance environmental sustainability in space, a pressing issue in our age of increased satellite launches.

Collaboration between Academia and Industry

As more companies enter the space sector, the need to develop efficient ways to monitor space objects becomes critical. Philip Ferguson, Associate Professor at UM, emphasized that research is crucial to prevent potential collisions and maintain a stable orbital region. The Redwing project, a significant initiative funded by DND, focuses on developing a microsatellite dedicated to tracking these objects.

Redwing: A Cutting-Edge Microsatellite

The Redwing project is an R&D microsatellite valued at $15.8 million. This Canadian-made satellite is designed to monitor objects in Earth’s orbit, thus minimizing risks posed to space operations from debris and other human activities. Magellan is at the forefront of this project, managing design, construction, and operational aspects.

Supporting Technology: The LISSA Nanosatellite

In April 2024, an additional companion nanosatellite named Little Innovator in Space Situational Awareness (LISSA) was contracted by DND for $900,000. This nanosatellite will complement Redwing's functionality and assist in observations once both satellites are deployed in the same orbital path.

Enhancing Space Domain Awareness

Corey Mack, Director of Engineering and Space Systems at Magellan, shared the importance of collaborations among government, academic, and industrial sectors to drive innovation in space technology. Their joint effort on Redwing and LISSA will advance space domain awareness techniques that are essential to ensure the safety of space traffic.

Challenges in Observing the South Pole

LISSA will specifically target observations over the Earth’s South Pole—a region with limited ground-based surveillance. This area poses unique challenges, chiefly due to reflected light caused by ice and cloud cover during summer months. To tackle these issues, Dstl will provide a short-wave infrared camera for LISSA, which will operate more effectively than traditional imaging methods.

Advancements in International Cooperation

Dr. Gemma Bagheri, Dstl’s Space Research and Development Programme Manager, noted the significance of collaboration between Canada and the UK as a means to enhance space security and protect mutual interests in the domain. Both Redwing and LISSA are anticipated for launch in 2027.

Data Management and Future Implications

After launch, Magellan will oversee the operational management of both satellites, with support from UM’s STARLab and communication with ground stations provided by C-CORE located in Inuvik and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The gathered mission data will be vital for ongoing analysis and will contribute to the research diversity in defense and space awareness.

About Magellan Aerospace Corporation
