Indigenous Business Council's Stance on U.S. Tariffs

Indigenous Business Council's Response to U.S. Tariffs

The Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) stands firmly against the recent tariffs implemented by the United States. These unjustified measures threaten the economic growth of Canadian and Indigenous communities alike, challenging the core principles of fair trade.

Indigenous peoples have a rich history of trade rooted deeply in the lands we occupy. Our adaptability, advocacy skills, and commitment to supporting each other during tough times have always been integral to our culture. This current situation calls upon these values more than ever.

In light of the tariffs, CCIB has been proactive over the last month in mobilizing efforts to assist our members. Here are some of the actions we have undertaken:

- Engaged with Global Affairs Canada and potential export markets to advocate for Indigenous business interests, opening doors to new export opportunities.

- Collaborated with Indigenous leaders nationwide to explore and share experiences that contribute Indigenous perspectives in policy discussions.

- Continued to push for the involvement of Indigenous elected leaders in discussions regarding rights protected under Section 35, UNDRIP, and the Jay Treaty.

- Advocated for prioritization of Indigenous procurement at various levels of government to bolster economic development.

- Partnered with industry and government, providing essential advice to prevent Indigenous businesses from being sidelined.

- Championed the reduction of internal trade barriers, which is crucial for the competitiveness and resilience of Indigenous businesses.

- Communicated these initiatives through Canadian media outlets, highlighting the significance of the Indigenous economy in broader economic discussions.

Looking ahead, we are preparing several initiatives to deliver robust support:

Initiatives to Support Indigenous Businesses

Buy Indigenous Campaign: This initiative aims to encourage consumers, corporations, and government entities to prioritize and support Indigenous-made products and services. Resources will be provided to effectively promote this message.

Tariff Support Page: Similar to our COVID-19 resource hub, this new page will serve as a source for up-to-date information regarding tariff impacts, available resources, and support programs for Indigenous businesses.

Access to Support Programs: We will ensure that government and industry-led programs designed to cushion against tariff impacts are made accessible to Indigenous enterprises.

CCIB remains dedicated to representing the interests of Indigenous businesses in discussions with both governmental bodies and industry leaders. As we navigate these challenging times, our mission to advance economic reconciliation and foster an inclusive economy remains paramount.

We invite everyone to stay connected and voice any concerns. By working together, we can strengthen our communities and support Indigenous economic growth.

About Canadian Council for Indigenous Business
