Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium Advances Key Projects

The Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium (IAEC) has exciting news. A team formed collaboratively in Idaho and Wyoming, known as the Intermountain West Nuclear Energy Corridor (INEC), saw all five of its proposals selected by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). These proposals are moving forward in the final competition for funding under the 2025 Regional Technology Innovation Tech Hub Program.

INEC Tech Hub: A Unique Opportunity

The INEC Tech Hub has earned recognition as one of only 31 selected regional Tech Hubs by the EDA. Out of these, INEC stands out as one of just 19 that were invited to submit comprehensive proposals in this recent funding opportunity. Christi Gilchrist, the Executive Director of IAEC, expressed optimism about the potential of the INEC Tech Hub. She stated, "This advancement secures the nation's future in energy production, economic competitiveness, and national security."

Components of the Proposal

The Stage I proposal, submitted in late 2025, includes five major component projects aimed at revolutionizing energy production and workforce training:

1. Accelerating Advanced Reactor Deployment

This initiative focuses on the swift introduction of innovative nuclear technology.

2. Modernizing Fuel Management

Enhancements in fuel management practices aim to streamline operations and ensure efficiency in energy generation.

3. Growing the Nuclear Workforce

The project emphasizes the importance of education and training in renewable energy sectors, preparing professionals for future challenges.

4. Reinvigorating the Nuclear Supply Chain

By strengthening the supply chain, the sector can ensure that it meets the demands of both innovation and sustainability.

5. Scaling America's Nuclear Innovation

A focus on scaling existing technologies to bolster the U.S.'s position in advanced energy production frameworks.

Funding and Next Steps

The IAEC is seeking approximately $75 million to support these initiatives over the next five years. Following a thorough review, the EDA has confirmed that the INEC Stage I proposal has successfully passed its evaluation and will allow the consortium to submit a Stage II proposal in early 2026. The final rounds of granting are anticipated to conclude in spring 2026.

Public-Private Partnership Strength

Kirt Marlow, President of the IAEC, shared enthusiasm regarding this progression: "This advancement reflects the strength of our public-private partnerships. We’re grateful for the EDA's confidence. It's a pivotal moment as we seek to showcase how strategic investments in our Tech Hub can significantly contribute to America’s energy transition."

About Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium

The Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium has a clear mission. Founded in 2023, IAEC brings together stakeholders from the energy sector to explore advancements in nuclear energy and other sustainable systems. Focused on developing clean energy technologies, IAEC is also working on innovative approaches like enhanced electrolysis for bulk hydrogen production and improving efficiencies in hydropower. With a commitment to commercializing advanced nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors and microreactors, the consortium is paving the way for a sustainable energy future.
