Hydro’s Strategic Enhancements Driving Sustainable Growth Ahead

Hydro’s Strategic Enhancements Driving Sustainable Growth Ahead

Hydro's Path to Sustainable Growth and Innovation

Hydro is dedicated to its 2030 strategy, navigating considerable market uncertainties while delivering impressive results. The company is committed to capitalizing on the green transition opportunities by investing in new wire rod capacity, which bolsters Europe’s electric infrastructure. The Illvatn pumped storage plant investment supports the scaling of renewable power generation in Norway. These efforts, alongside advancements in Extrusions and Recycling, position Hydro for long-term profit while addressing green and geopolitical challenges—key topics for Hydro’s Investor Day 2025.

Key Highlights from Hydro's Strategy

Operational Improvements and Cost Efficiency

Hydro Extrusions is proposing to close five plants in Europe to streamline operations, enhance capacity utilization, and reduce costs, with an estimated restructuring cost of NOK 1.9 billion. This move is projected to yield annual savings of NOK 0.5 billion starting in 2027. Furthermore, a strategic workforce adjustment is being executed ahead of schedule, expected to save approximately NOK 1 billion per year starting in 2026.

Capital Allocation Updates and Targets

The capital allocation targets for 2025 and 2026 have been revised down to NOK 13.5 billion from NOK 15 billion. This adjustment includes removing the previous annual flexibility of NOK 1–2 billion from short and medium-term guidance, although the long-term CAPEX guidance of NOK 15 billion remains intact.

Hydro's EBITDA target for Extrusions has been adjusted from NOK 10-12 billion to NOK 8-10 billion reflecting a more cautious outlook on market recovery. The lower range for the recycling 2030 target EBITDA remains confirmed at NOK 5 billion, but projection limits have now shifted to NOK 5-6 billion due to changes in capital allocation. Additionally, shareholder distribution strategies are in line with the revised dividend policy and capital structure targets.

Hydro’s Commitment to the Green Transition

In a world of fluctuating markets, Hydro is resolute about its strategy towards pioneering the green aluminium transition utilizing renewable energy sources. President and CEO, Eivind Kallevik, emphasizes that Hydro's integrated value chain and extensive geographical presence equip the company to navigate upcoming challenges while continuing to advance sustainable goals.

In June 2025, Hydro initiated a significant workforce reduction and cost-cutting program aimed at maintaining financial flexibility and enhancing competitiveness in an unpredictable environment.

Focus on Recycling and Sustainable Practices

Hydro's commitment to recycling is also noteworthy. As the company strengthens its market position in recycling, it aims to achieve substantial growth by enhancing its capabilities in sourcing and processing complex scrap materials. By the end of 2025, Hydro expects to reach a capacity of 850 kt of post-consumer scrap, progressing towards a targeted range of 850,000 - 1,100,000 tonnes by 2030.

Moreover, the 2030 target for Recycling's earnings has been adjusted to reflect NOK 5-6 billion based on current conditions, but growth goals exceed mere capacity expansion, demonstrating Hydro’s resilience and commitment to sustainable practices.

Investments in Renewable Energy Production

Hydro has taken a significant step forward with its largest hydropower investment in over two decades—the Illvatn pumped storage project. This NOK 2.5 billion project increases capacity by 48 MW, generating 107 GWh of renewable energy essential for Hydro’s aluminium production. With expected net investment after taxes of around NOK 1.2 billion, this initiative strengthens Hydro’s long-term energy strategy, reinforcing its ambition towards net-zero aluminium production by 2050.

Decarbonization and Future Goals

The company is actively pursuing its net-zero target for 2050, implementing measures to reduce CO2 emissions across its operations. Hydro is on track to achieve a 15 percent CO2 reduction by 2025, surpassing its initial 10 percent goal while significantly advancing its integrated climate, nature, and social impact agendas.

Education and community development remain priorities, with over 300 community projects supported in 2025 alone, highlighting Hydro's commitment to sustainability in all aspects of its operations.

Strengthening Financial Resilience

Despite challenging market conditions, Hydro’s financial performance demonstrates resilience. The adjusted EBITDA from Q4 2024 to Q3 2025 stood at NOK 31 billion, significantly higher than the previous year's performance and demonstrating effective cost management.
