HII Secures Major Contract for Amphibious Ships
In a significant development, HII has announced that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division has successfully landed a substantial multi-ship procurement contract worth $9.6 billion. This deal is set to greatly enhance the U.S. Navy's amphibious capabilities by facilitating the construction of three new San Antonio-class (LPD 17) amphibious ships and a modification for the next America-class (LHA 6) large-deck amphibious ship.
Overview of the Multi-Ship Procurement
This remarkable contract is the first of its kind aimed specifically at amphibious ship procurement. It sets the stage for the construction of LPDs 33, 34, 35, and LHA 10. Kari Wilkinson, the President of Ingalls Shipbuilding, expressed her appreciation for the stability this contract provides, highlighting its significance not just for the shipbuilders but also for the communities around them.
Dedication to Naval Forces
Wilkinson shared her perspective on the workforce, noting that nearly half of Ingalls' shipbuilders are currently focused on amphibious vessel construction. The company works closely with about 650 suppliers spread across 39 states, ensuring that necessary components are available to support this substantial project.
Building up the Shipbuilding Workforce
Ingalls is keen to grow its workforce by inviting experienced and new shipbuilders to join their team. Wilkinson stated, "We stand ready to strengthen an already capable team with fresh ideas and skills from new shipbuilders who want to make a difference." This recruitment push underscores HII's commitment to meeting the operational needs of the U.S. military.
A Strong Legacy in Naval Shipbuilding
HII boasts a storied history in shipbuilding, having successfully delivered 13 San Antonio-class ships and 15 large-deck amphibious ships to the U.S. Navy. Currently, Ingalls is busy on the LHA production line, which includes work on Bougainville (LHA 8) and Fallujah (LHA 9). Additionally, two Flight II LPDs, Harrisburg (LPD 30) and Pittsburgh (LPD 31), are also under construction.
In March 2023, Ingalls received a modification contract for the detail design and construction of Philadelphia (LPD 32), marking the 16th vessel in the San Antonio class. These efforts clearly illustrate HII's continued commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the U.S. Navy.
