High Point University Celebrates Veterans Day with Heartfelt Tribute

High Point University recently hosted a remarkable Veterans Day Celebration, drawing around 2,500 veterans, family members, and community guests to the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center. This event honored the brave men and women who have served their country with honor and sacrifice.

Kicking off the ceremony was Grammy Award-winning artist Lee Greenwood, serving as HPU’s Artist in Residence. He captivated the audience with a powerful performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," concluding the program with his famous anthem, "God Bless the USA." This stirring display earned him a well-deserved standing ovation as attendees were moved by both his singing and a majestic bald eagle named Clark, which soared high above the gathering, symbolizing freedom.

“High Point University embodies values of God, family, and country,” stated HPU President Nido Qubein in his inspiring opening remarks. “We are proud to embrace everyone, and we hold fast to our traditions of respect and gratitude toward our nation’s heroes.”

Recognized as potentially the largest Veterans Day celebration on a college campus nationwide, HPU’s event matched the attendance of the prior year, where the audience numbers peaked to historic levels.

Dr. McKennon Shea, HPU’s senior vice president for development, emphasized the university’s commitment to shaping an environment for students filled with examples of heroism and service. He stated, “This celebration is a testament to our mission of ensuring students are inspired by the courage and sacrifices of those who have defended our freedoms.”

One of the highlights included a motivational speech by U.S. Army veteran Edward Graham, the chief operating officer of Samaritan’s Purse and grandson of the renowned evangelist Billy Graham. Graham shared his journey, acknowledging his early dreams of military service and his eventual calling to ministry, where he aims to leave a lasting impact.

HPU recently made headlines by donating $100,000 to Samaritan’s Purse to support relief efforts for communities affected by natural disasters. This donation demonstrates the university's commitment to giving back to those in need.

The event saw hundreds of volunteers from the student body and staff warmly welcoming veterans and assisting them. Guests enjoyed a complimentary breakfast while HPU students presented gifts during the “Armed Forces Medley,” in which the HPU Singers and North Carolina Brass Band honored each military branch's anthem.

Community Contributions to Veterans
In line with tradition, HPU generously donated around 100 American flags to local schools and nonprofit organizations, showcasing its dedication to the community.

Moreover, the university’s Kappa Alpha Order fraternity initiated Operation K.A.R.E. in 2016, which raised a remarkable $130,000 to provide Track Chairs and mobility aids for wounded veterans. During the event, two veterans received their Track Chairs, significantly enhancing their mobility and independence.

“The mission is clear – we have a moral duty to support those who have given so much for our freedom,” remarked Max Mody, a sophomore from HPU’s KA fraternity.

Veteran Tyler Nichols, a proud Army infantryman, expressed his gratitude for the new Track Chair. “It’s about accessibility. I can now enjoy hunting and fishing again without limitations. This change is monumental for me,” he shared, reflecting on how these devices alter lives.

Attendees also had the opportunity to sign the Star of Service and Sacrifice, adding a personal touch to the commemoration. This unique star serves as a visual reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and will be displayed on campus to inspire future generations.

“Being among these heroes is an honor,” expressed Gerald Coble, an Air Force veteran attending for the second time.

Recognizing Leadership

Furthermore, HPU junior Emerson Siefken, part of the Air Force ROTC, received the prestigious Brigadier General Norman C. Gaddis Leadership Award. This honor is given to students exemplifying the military’s values of leadership and service. Established by HPU alumni to honor General Gaddis’s legacy, this award recognizes those who strive for excellence.

Siefken noted, “It’s an incredible honor to learn from such exemplary figures who highlight the importance of service before self.”

The finalists for the Gaddis Leadership Award also received recognition, along with a monetary award and challenge coins celebrating their achievements in education and leadership.

HPU’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration is generously supported by various community partners and endowments, including the Sheriff Family Veterans Awareness Endowment and others committed to promoting veterans' awareness and support.
