Helicopter-Assisted Tree Trimming Enhances Service Reliability

Aerial saw will improve clearance around power lines in various counties.

Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission Company (MAIT), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), is currently employing a helicopter with an aerial saw to trim trees in order to maintain proper clearance around over 400 miles of high-voltage power lines. This crucial work is being undertaken in the Penelec service area of Pennsylvania and is expected to complete by year’s end, ensuring that power remains reliable.

The operation is focused on maintaining the clearances required to prevent tree-related power outages. Weather conditions can often lead to significant challenges during summer and winter storms, and providing necessary tree maintenance contributes greatly to reducing these risks. Additionally, clearing incompatible vegetation allows personnel better access to power lines for inspections and quicker repairs if outages occur.

John Hawkins, FirstEnergy President for Pennsylvania, emphasizes the importance of these measures: "Maintaining our high-voltage power lines clear of potential interference from trees is vital for enhancing system reliability. The aerial saw is invaluable, covering vast stretches of transmission lines safely and efficiently each year."

The aerial saw operates suspended beneath the helicopter and is outfitted with multiple 24-inch rotary blades, making it especially suitable for areas that are environmentally sensitive or challenging to navigate with traditional tree trimming equipment. This technique can clear more area within a single day than a ground crew would typically manage in an entire week, helping to improve operational efficiency.

The device effectively cuts tree limbs that are 8 to 10 inches in diameter. After being cut, the limbs fall directly to the ground, aided by air blasts generated by the helicopter rotors. Ground crew personnel thereafter ensure that the fallen limbs are cleared from roads, yards, and fields, as well as flagging and stopping vehicles nearby if the aerial saw is in operation.

As the helicopter performs trimming, the pilot remains in constant communication with local airport personnel to ensure safe airspace usage. The aerial saw is safely operated by Aerial Solutions, working strictly according to weather conditions.

This tree maintenance initiative is part of FirstEnergy's broad vegetation management program, which for 2025 has a budget of approximately $51 million designated for trimming trees along more than 4,100 miles of power lines in the Penelec area.

Penelec serves a sizable customer base, with around 597,000 consumers spread across a vast 17,600 square miles in the northern and central regions of the state. Stay connected with Penelec through their social media channels for updates on services and initiatives.

FirstEnergy is committed to upholding values of integrity, safety, and operational excellence. The company is one of the largest investor-owned electric systems in the country, proudly serving customers in states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, and New York. Its subsidiaries manage an extensive 24,000 miles of transmission lines that effectively connect the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.
