Georgia Power Seeks Approval for Massive Energy Resource Expansion

Georgia Power Seeks Approval for New Energy Resources

Georgia Power has taken significant steps forward by filing a request for the certification of approximately 9,900 megawatts (MW) of new energy resources from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). This expansion aims to ensure that the growing energy demands of the state are met reliably and economically. In line with the 2022 and 2025 Integrated Resource Plans, the proposed projects include a mix of natural gas turbines, battery energy storage systems, and solar power.

Details on New Resources

The majority of the identified resources include around 8,000 MW selected from an all-source request for proposals (RFP) approved by the Georgia PSC. This comprehensive evaluation took place over the past year, allowing Georgia Power to work closely with PSC staff and independent evaluators to select the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for energy generation and storage. The goal is to ensure these resources are ready to meet projected winter capacity needs between 2029 and 2031, enhancing reliability for customers.

Furthermore, Georgia Power has also submitted a request to certify an additional 1,886 MW of supplemental resources necessary for addressing immediate energy needs that the All-Source RFP does not cover. This filing is a critical part of keeping energy supply consistent and affordable for Georgians.

Commitment to Reliable Energy

“Every day, our teams diligently work to keep energy flowing reliably during extreme weather conditions,” stated Rick Anderson, senior vice president and production officer at Georgia Power. “The proactive planning behind our filings ensures that we select the right mix of resources to support the energy needs of Georgians now and in the future.” Georgia Power’s diverse energy initiatives not only assure a stable energy supply but also aim to enhance long-term value and sustainability for all customers.

Expanding Natural Gas Capacity

Georgia Power’s strategy continues to incorporate cleaner natural gas into its energy mix, a move that has already contributed to more than a 60% reduction in carbon emissions since 2007. The company is actively pursuing the construction of new natural gas facilities at Plant McIntosh and Plant Yates, leveraging approvals obtained from the PSC in previous IRPs. The latest filings include the establishment of five new combined cycle (CC) units with a total capacity of 3,692 MW.

Combined Cycle Projects

Among the new combined cycle projects submitted are:

  • Bowen: Located in Bartow County, this site will feature two combined cycles with a capacity of 1,482 MW.
  • McIntosh: This facility in Effingham County will add one CC unit with a capacity of 757 MW, complementing the existing units already under operation.
  • Wansley: Incorporating two CC units with a combined 1,453 MW capacity in Heard County.

Innovating with Battery Energy Storage

Georgia Power is focused on integrating advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) to bolster the reliability of its electric supply. These projects play a crucial role in managing energy generated from renewable sources, effectively storing excess energy for use during peak demand times. This utility is pivotal, especially in providing energy during cold winter mornings when demand surges.

Current and Upcoming BESS Projects

Currently, construction is taking place on 765 MW of BESS assets across various counties, with plans for ten new facilities adding up to 3,022.5 MW. Notable new BESS facilities proposed include:

  • Bowen Phases 1 & 2: 500 MW BESS at Plant Bowen.
  • Hammond Phase 2: 192.5 MW BESS located in Floyd County.
  • McIntosh: 250 MW BESS at this substantial plant site.

Solar Initiatives Combined with Storage

In tandem with BESS, Georgia Power is set to develop state-of-the-art solar systems paired with storage to enhance renewable energy provision further. These innovative projects are expected to deliver a cumulative capacity of 350 MW. This solar portfolio focuses on optimizing sites with high solar irradiance while ensuring minimal environmental disruption during construction.

New Solar Plus Storage Facilities

The proposed solar systems with attached BESS projects include:

  • Laurens County: This site will offer 200 MW of solar coupled with a matching 200 MW BESS.
  • Mitchell: Located in Dougherty County, this project includes 150 MW of solar with a corresponding 150 MW BESS.
