Performance of GEN3 Silicon-Anode Lithium-Ion Batteries
After undergoing 50 cycles, 18650 batteries utilizing GEN3 silicon-based materials demonstrate a remarkable 40% increase in capacity compared to traditional graphite. They also show a 25% improvement over GEN1 batteries and a 15% enhancement over GEN2 batteries, all while exhibiting no significant degradation.
Key Battery Milestones
HPQ Silicon Inc. (“HPQ” or the “Company”), a technology firm focused on the sustainable engineering of silica and silicon-based materials, is excited to share the latest important battery milestones achieved by its affiliate based in France, NOVACIUM SAS.
This announcement highlights the outcomes of 50 charge-discharge cycle tests designed to mimic real-world usage, allowing for an evaluation of the durability and longevity of the latest series of Lithium-ion 18650 commercial batteries. These batteries are made with a combination of graphite and Novacium’s partially optimized GEN3 advanced silicon-based anode material. The performance of the 18650 GEN3-based batteries has been impressive, showing an overall capacity increase of around 40% when compared to a graphite benchmark.
This performance is 25% superior to that of the previous GEN1 material and 15% better than GEN2 material, with any performance degradation being so minimal that it falls within the margin of error compared to the graphite benchmark.
“The production of 18650 battery cells that excel in charge-discharge cycle testing and exceed 4,000 mAh under maximum discharge conditions reinforces our status as a leading producer of advanced silicon anode material,” stated Dr. Jed Kraiem, COO of Novacium. “With these results and the data we’ve collected, we are optimistic about our ability to further enhance our materials, and we believe that GEN4-based 18650 batteries could surpass the 4,400 mAh threshold.”
Improving Battery Performance
Graph 1 illustrates that batteries constructed with Novacium GEN3 materials achieved significantly higher capacities during the first 50 cycles when compared to those made with GEN2 and GEN1 materials, as well as the 100% graphite benchmarked batteries.
The average capacity of three 18650 batteries utilizing Novacium GEN3 materials began at 3,883.0 mAh and decreased to 3,864.8 mAh by the end of the 50th cycle. In contrast, batteries made with Novacium GEN2 materials started at 3,370.1 mAh and dropped to 3,356.0 mAh, while those with GEN1 materials began at 3,145.5 mAh and fell to 3,105.4 mAh. Lastly, the average capacity of three 18650 batteries made with 100% graphite started at 2,780.0 mAh and decreased to 2,769.1 mAh by the 50th cycle.
Thus, after 50 cycles, GEN3 silicon-based batteries exhibit an overall capacity improvement of approximately 40% compared to the graphite benchmark, 25% compared to GEN1 material, and 15% compared to GEN2 material.
Results on Battery Degradation
Graph 2 shows that the performance degradation of GEN3 advanced silicon material over 50 cycles is minimal, retaining 99.59% capacity compared to the graphite benchmark at 99.61%. This slight difference is within the margin of error defined by the testing protocol.
“Achieving these results with full-size 18650 industrial batteries after 50 cycles further highlights Novacium's capability to produce advanced silicon anode material that significantly boosts overall battery performance while seamlessly integrating into existing anode manufacturing facilities,” remarked Mr. Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicon Inc. and NOVACIUM SAS. “This smooth integration means that manufacturers can adopt this advanced silicon anode material without the need for costly retooling or process changes, ensuring a more efficient transition, reducing downtime, and minimizing additional expenses, ultimately speeding up the introduction of high-performance batteries into the market.”
