FS KKR Capital Corp. Sees Losses, Declares $0.48 Distribution

Drama Unfolds in FSK’s Financial Performance

The latest figures from FS KKR Capital Corp. aren’t exactly what you’d call a victory lap. Their recent earnings call showcased a sobering narrative about net investment income and asset valuations, making it abundantly clear: 2025 was a tough year in the trenches.

Quarterly and Annual Insights

For the fourth quarter of 2025, investors are facing a net investment income clocking in at $0.48 per share, a drop from $0.57 just the previous quarter. If you look at the annual net investment income for the year, it slipped to $2.34 per share from $2.90 in 2024, which raises eyebrows.

“As we conclude 2025 and begin looking forward to 2026, we acknowledge specific challenges associated with a few investments which impacted our results,” admitted Michael C. Forman, the CEO. Good to know they’re aware of their mess.

The numbers are daunting: a total net realized and unrealized loss of $2.30 per share versus last year’s loss of $0.81. Ouch! When you watch losses pile up like this, it reeks of underlying issues that can't just be brushed aside.

Distribution Declared Amidst Losses

On a slightly brighter note for shareholders, FS KKR's board declared a distribution of $0.48 per share for Q1 2026. The split includes a $0.45 base and a $0.03 supplemental; paid out on or about April 2, 2026. Here's hoping shareholders aren't just sitting back expecting these payouts forever.

Portfolio Battles

The underlying portfolio presents a mixed bag. A fair value of investments resting at $13.00 billion, while senior secured securities represent 62.4% of that pie. Despite a hefty amount invested in safer ground, they’re still staring at an increasing net debt to equity ratio of 122%—up from 116% just the previous quarter. That’s a slap in the face for risk management, to say the least.

Then there's the yield on accruing debt investments coming in at 10.1%.That sounds alright until you consider that this has dipped from 10.6%. Not an encouraging trend when many are trying to squeeze out some returns amidst rising interest rates. The reality here feels like watching a stock car race where the cars keep getting spun out.

Staggering Realized Losses

The company’s aggressive selling during the quarter led to over $1 billion in purchases but countered by $1.334 billion in sales and repayments. That’s a troubling signal—almost like they're trying to cut their losses in a fire sale. And let’s not forget the non-accrual investments, which have upped their game too: 3.4% of the total investment portfolio, compared to 2.9% in the previous quarter. Investors ought to keep that risk in mind. It’s an eerie pattern, really, and it begs the question: are they overexposed?

Looking Ahead

The next few months will be critical for FS KKR. With a forward-looking lens, their investment team plans to tackle these underperforming investments and continue focusing on high-quality origination, specifically in first-lien senior secured structures. What’s unclear, though, is just how they intend to pivot effectively.

As we stare down the barrel of 2026, the mood remains somewhat skeptical but cautiously hopeful. KKR’s reputation is on the line here, and they need a solid foundation—no fluff, just hard, substantial returns that show strength amidst the tumult. Investors should watch closely; there's no time for more losses disguised as learning lessons.

The Bottom Line for Shareholders

It’s messy right now for those holding NYSE:FSK shares, and if you’re still in the game, you’d better brace yourself. The declared distribution offers a sliver of positivity, but the bigger picture shows that there's heavy lifting ahead. Keep your heads up, folks—2026 could still turn around if they play their cards right, but it’s a bumpy ride on the way there.
