Freed-Hardeman University's Annual Bible Lectureship
For the 90th year running, Freed-Hardeman University proudly hosts its Annual Bible Lectureship. Taking place from February 1 to 5, this event is an open invitation to Christians, church leaders, and Bible enthusiasts from all over. Registration is completely free, making it accessible for anyone keen to delve into the teachings of the Bible.
Theme of the Lectureship
This year, participants will explore the theme "Our God, His Kingdom: Seeing the Christ in Matthew." This unique focus allows attendees to engage with Jesus' teachings, miracles, and ultimate sacrifice as depicted in the Gospel of Matthew. This thoughtful examination aims to deepen understanding and enhance spiritual growth among participants.
Impact on the Community
Dr. Doug Burleson, the Lectureship Director, expressed excitement about the event, noting, "The Annual Bible Lectureship brings thousands of Christians from around the nation and the world to our campus for a special time of fellowship, networking, and study." His hope is that this engaging week will not only enrich the FHU community but also positively influence the wider community.
Honoring Legacy and Service
The 2026 Lectureship will honor notable figures Dr. James L. and Becky Gardner, whose years of dedication have profoundly impacted the church and countless students. An appreciation dinner will take place at Brewer Sports Center's Auxiliary Gym on February 3 to recognize their contributions.
Inclusive Programs for All
For the first time, the Hispanic Lectureship Workshop will take place prior to the main event, catering specifically to Spanish-speaking attendees from January 30 to February 1. This initiative demonstrates the university's commitment to inclusivity and understanding across different cultures.
Each evening at 7 p.m. in Dryden Auditorium, keynote speakers will address attendees. Some of the notable speakers include FHU President David R. Shannon, who will present "Our God Becomes Like One of Us," alongside honoree James L. Gardner, Eric Garner, Bryan McAlister, and Hiwatthia Jones, each addressing distinct topics related to the theme.
Youth and Family Focus
A special two-day Youth and Family Workshop will also be featured, offering over 20 sessions aimed at fostering ministry skills for children, families, and youth. The Teen Lectureship, designed for grades 6-12, will facilitate discussions encouraging spiritual growth, while the Kids Lectureship provides a nurturing environment for younger children. Early registration is required for the Kids Lectureship by January 18.
Educational Opportunities for Adults
Teachers and preachers will benefit from workshops titled "The Preacher's Toolbox," "Teaching Like the Master," and "The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached," among others. Attendees will delve into Bible studies that address historical contexts, biblical prophecies, and their applications today.
Reflections on Freedom
This year also marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and a special series titled "The Riches and Responsibilities of the American Christian" will reflect on the freedoms Christians have enjoyed in the United States.
Two new publications will be available during the Lectureship, featuring contributions from both men and women. Each book aims to cater to a diverse audience and encourage deeper study among attendees. Resources from FHU Press, including family devotionals and thematic studies, will also be available.
