Florida Polytechnic Engineers Unveil Innovative Body-Cam Trigger

Innovative Technology for Police Safety

The skilled engineers at Florida Polytechnic University have partnered with the Lakeland Police Department to revolutionize how officers operate their body cameras. They have developed a unique device that simplifies the process of activating body cameras during critical moments when officers need to draw their firearms.

The Patent-Pending Device

This new invention, which is currently patent pending, is designed to be worn on the holster of every police officer in Lakeland. With this device, activating a body camera is seamless and immediate, ensuring that vital moments are captured without additional steps.

Collaboration with Florida Polytechnic University

Chief Sammy Taylor reflected on the impactful partnership: "I want to thank the incredible team at Florida Poly for their partnership in developing this innovative solution for our agency that enhances safety and functionality. This collaboration is a perfect example of the remarkable talent and ingenuity we are fortunate to have here."

Technical Specifications and Functionality

Matthew DeCicco, a recent graduate and the primary inventor of the device, along with Mike Kalman, a mechanical engineering fabrication specialist at the university, focused on creating a durable bracket. This bracket securely attaches to an officer's firearm holster and activates the body camera when the firearm is drawn.

Design Challenges and Innovations

The design journey was not without obstacles. Kalman noted that existing holsters were incompatible with the advanced technology used by the department. "This is the high-tech solution for the high-tech gun," Kalman explained. Their design utilizes a magnet that detects when the weapon is being pulled away from the holster.

As the gun is drawn, the bracket signals the body camera to start recording, turning an indicator light from green to red.

Enhancements to Officer Equipment

Further enhancing the functionality, the device also triggers nearby car cameras to begin recording and alerts other officers in the vicinity when a weapon is drawn. This capability ensures that all critical interactions are logged and monitored in real-time.

Constructing for Real-World Application

The team employed state-of-the-art technology, utilizing 3D printing to produce over 400 robust brackets. They opted for a strong carbon fiber filament to ensure the reliability of the device during strenuous daily police operations.

DeCicco expressed pride in representing Florida Poly through this project: "It was cool to get to represent Florida Poly on a larger scale and help out the community where the University exists." DeCicco now works for AEVEX Aerospace, emphasizing the importance of community initiative.

Future of the Device

Florida Poly is continuing to seek patent protection for this innovative device, with initial testing already in progress to ensure its effectiveness.

Continued Collaboration

Capt. Ron Bowling, Jr. highlighted the device's importance: "We wanted something that works with our existing system that can trigger the Axon body camera any time a taser is turned on. They did just an amazing job." The collaboration between the Lakeland Police and Florida Poly serves as a significant stride towards enhancing police safety through technology.
