Exploring Small Pets' Impact on Mental Wellbeing Through Research

New Research Focused on Small Pets and Human Wellbeing

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute has initiated an intriguing study to explore how adopting small pets can influence the wellbeing of pet owners. This pioneering research is being led by Professor Carri Westgarth from the University of Liverpool, who aims to delve into the unique bond between humans and smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters.

The Objectives of This Study

This comprehensive study will utilize surveys and interviews with owners of small pets to track the shifts in their mental and physical health after the adoption of these adorable companions. The research will particularly emphasize pets adopted from shelters, aiming to gather valuable insights from owners who have taken the step to provide a home for these creatures.

Engaging the Pet Owner Community

Professor Westgarth remarked, "Research often gravitates towards dogs and cats; however, less information is available about the health impacts associated with owning small furry pets. Our aim is to fill this gap and highlight the experiences related to adopting such pets from shelters, which can greatly assist in shaping strategies for successful adoptions."

Two-Part Study Structure

The research consists of two main components. Initially, it will feature in-depth interviews with 30 pet owners to investigate their perceptions and experiences regarding small pet ownership and its impact on personal wellbeing. Following this, a cohort study involving 450 new pet owners will be conducted, with follow-ups at one, three, and six months post-adoption from various shelters, including Woodgreen Pets Charity. This longitudinal aspect is aimed at understanding how the human-animal bond evolves and its subsequent effects on the owners' psychological and social health.

Positive Health Outcomes Expected

Researchers anticipate that the adoption of small rescue pets will positively influence health outcomes for these owners. This expectation is founded on the understanding that the companionship of animals can bring about substantial emotional and physical benefits to their owners.

Advocacy for All Pets' Benefits

Steven Feldman, President of HABRI, asserted that it is essential for human-animal bond research to encompass all types of pets. He expressed pride in supporting research dedicated to documenting the wellness benefits provided by small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs.

Importance of the Study

Fiona Cooke, Head of Specialist Services at Woodgreen Pets Charity, expressed excitement about the project, stating, "This research will cast light on the advantages of small pets and the distinctive bonds humans establish with them. Not only will it enhance support for individuals adopting small pets from places like Woodgreen, but it will also assist in keeping more pets in loving homes—an essential mission we hold dear."
