Downtown Frederick Partnership is thrilled to announce the launch of Artopia, an exciting event dedicated to celebrating local art and creativity. This inaugural event invites everyone to immerse themselves in the vibrant artistic landscape of the city, filled with live demonstrations, interactive art installations, and friendly competition throughout the town.
Experiencing Artopia
On the special day of Artopia, attendees can start exploring the transformed streets at 10 AM. The downtown area will be alive as it becomes an open-air gallery, showcasing impressive chalk art and live plein air painting created by talented local artists. Visitors can witness a community mural project led by the skilled artist Lea Craigie-Marshall, and admire the stunning chalk art created by students from the African Americans of Excellence Award.
Live Art Competitions
The excitement ramps up as the first-ever live art competitions take center stage at Artopia. Student artists will compete in a thrilling challenge from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at JoJo's Restaurant & Tap House. Following that, adult artists will take their turn from 7:30 PM to 9 PM at Olde Mother Brewing. In this engaging format, each artist receives a surprise theme and just one hour to create their artwork, with the audience participating by voting for their favorites.

Beyond the artistic activities of the day, participants will have the chance to explore over 15 galleries and studio spaces that enrich Downtown Frederick's creative scene. The Partnership has generously arranged for parking spaces directly in front of these galleries, allowing artists to set up tents and display their works, reminiscent of charming artist setups often seen near creeks. Notably, some plein air paintings will continue to be showcased in downtown galleries for a limited time after the event.

Artopia conveniently coincides with the 31st annual Frederick Festival of the Arts, which will take place over the weekend at Carroll Creek Park. This unique scheduling allows attendees to dive deeper into their artistic exploration, making for a weekend filled with inspiration and creativity.
