Enhancing Biomanufacturing Skills Through OBIO® and CATTI Initiative

In an exciting new partnership, OBIO® and CATTI are pioneering a program designed to strengthen Canada's biomanufacturing capabilities specifically for advanced therapies. This initiative has been made possible in part by support from Upskill Canada, Palette Skills, and the Government of Canada. As the landscape of biomanufacturing evolves, the demand for skilled professionals in areas such as cell and gene therapies (CGT) has become increasingly critical. To meet this growing need, OBIO® and CATTI are launching the Biomanufacturing for Advanced Therapies Training Program.

Addressing Workforce Shortages in Advanced Therapies

The Biomanufacturing for Advanced Therapies Training Program is dedicated to training approximately 280 individuals across Canada by March 2026. This program focuses on equipping participants with the specific skills needed in advanced therapy manufacturing, which significantly differ from traditional biopharmaceutical processes. Companies in this sector collaborated closely with OBIO® and CATTI to create a comprehensive curriculum designed to meet the unique workforce challenges faced in this field.

Training Components and Curriculum Overview

At the heart of the training program is an intensive boot camp that spans one week, or roughly 40 hours, held at CATTI’s Guelph facility. This practical training provides participants with hands-on experience in crucial techniques such as cell culture and aseptic processing. Experienced trainers conduct thorough assessments to ensure learners achieve proficiency. Additionally, the program includes virtual training sessions that encompass essential topics like Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC), Quality Assurance (QA), Intellectual Property (IP), and other professional skills.

Invitation to Potential Participants

Employers seeking to enhance their talent pool, along with individuals eager to upskill for a career in biomanufacturing, are encouraged to reach out to discover more about the benefits and details of this heavily subsidized training program. This initiative is an important step in strengthening Canada’s position in the competitive biomanufacturing landscape.

Support from Leaders in the Biomanufacturing Sector

Several key figures have shared their enthusiasm for this initiative, highlighting its potential to foster growth in Canada’s biomanufacturing field. Dr. Maura Campbell, President and CEO of OBIO®, expressed her excitement about the program, stating, “We are committed to developing a highly skilled workforce that can support the commercialization of cell and gene therapies in Canada.”

Industry Expert Insights

Vanessa Laflamme, CEO of CATTI, emphasized the significant impact that this training program can have on participants, saying, “Our aim is to ensure every participant gains professional benefits that lead to new opportunities or expanded responsibilities.” Likewise, Rhonda Barnet, CEO of Palette Skills, noted that this partnership would enable more candidates to enter the growing biomanufacturing sector with the expertise that employers are actively seeking.
