Enhancing Ankle Arthritis Care Through New Training Initiative

This program signifies a significant step forward for both organizations

In a collaborative effort to improve ankle arthritis care, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) and the Arthritis Foundation have teamed up to launch a pivotal program aimed at educating the next generation of medical professionals. This initiative coincides with Arthritis Awareness Month, marking it as a timely reminder of the importance of arthritis education and research.

The newly established Foot and Ankle Arthritis Development Program invites medical students and residents to enhance their understanding and skills related to foot and ankle arthritis. This program not only provides participants with mentorship and training but also offers them a unique glimpse into the world of ankle arthritis treatment.

We are thrilled to recognize the first cohort of participants selected for this influential initiative:

Rodrigo Encinas, MD, 3rd Year Resident, Orlando Health-Jewett Orthopaedic Institute;
Gabriel Gonzalez Diaz, MS, 4th Year Medical Student, Ponce Health Sciences University;
Alexandra Krez, MD, 2nd Year Resident, Hofstra University/Northwell Health;
Ramiro Lopez, BS, 4th Year Medical Student, Mayo Clinic;
Sarah Lu, BA, 4th Year Medical Student, University of Science and Medicine;
Alana O'Mara, MD, 2nd Year Resident, George Washington University;
Elizabeth Rich, MD, CPT, 3rd Year Resident, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

"We are thrilled to welcome this group of dedicated individuals into our program, which was developed in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation," said Jonathon D. Backus, MD, chair of the AOFAS Committee on Outside Collaborations. He emphasized that this program is an excellent opportunity for participants to deepen their knowledge about ankle-related arthritis, connect with skilled professionals in the field, and foster their interest in orthopaedic surgery as a career path.

As part of their educational journey, participants will have the chance to tour state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories at leading academic medical centers. They will visit renowned institutions, such as Resurgens Orthopaedics and Emory University, as well as Mercy Medical Center and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Additionally, they will attend prestigious events like the AOFAS Annual Meeting to gain further insights into ankle arthritis research and treatment.

Michelle M. McLeod, PhD, director of Osteoarthritis Clinical Research Programs at the Arthritis Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm for the program. "This initiative not only empowers the next generation of orthopaedic professionals but also reinforces our commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive landscape in healthcare. By investing in upcoming surgeons, we are contributing to a brighter future for orthopaedic care," she noted.

This program builds on the successful partnership between the AOFAS and the Arthritis Foundation, which previously awarded grants for ankle arthritis research. In 2023, the two organizations collaborated to offer the AF/AOFAS Ankle Arthritis Think Tank Research Grants, which allocated substantial funding to innovative studies aimed at advancing treatment protocols for ankle osteoarthritis.

The AOFAS is dedicated to enhancing orthopaedic foot and ankle care globally, mobilizing a community of surgeons committed to research, education, and advocacy. By promoting collaboration and excellence, the society aims to improve patient outcomes and understanding of ankle-related conditions.

Furthermore, the Arthritis Foundation is resolute in its mission to advocate for individuals living with arthritis, providing a support network that enhances healthcare policy and fosters breakthrough medical advancements.

As this training initiative unfolds, it stands as a beacon of hope for the advancement of ankle arthritis care and the future of healthcare professionals dedicated to this specialty.
