Empowering Veterans Through Therapeutic Sailing Adventures
Program Launches in Partnership with VetsBoats Foundation Dedicated to Enriching Veterans' Lives
Sailing For Veterans is excited to announce an inspiring initiative designed to honor our veterans by providing free day sails on the sailboat SV INDRA. This program kicks off on a meaningful day, which honors veterans, and is made possible through the collaboration with VetsBoats, a 501c3 nonprofit foundation committed to serving veterans.
A Voyage of Healing
This initiative aims to empower veterans and active-duty personnel by offering them the unique experience of sailing. Participants can enjoy a connection with nature that fosters camaraderie and community. Sailing allows individuals to build teamwork as they navigate the waters, finding peace and a renewed perspective on life—benefiting not only during the sail but for many days afterward.
The heartfelt origins of this initiative can be traced back to Marine Lance Cpl. Jason K. Burnett. His legacy inspires the team behind Sailing For Veterans. Jason's brother, Ryan Burnett, a Gold Star Family member and Marine veteran, co-founded this organization to keep his brother’s spirit alive and to support fellow veterans.
Remembering Lance Cpl. Jason K. Burnett
Jason had a remarkable ability to uplift those around him. He dedicated himself to serving others, whether through church activities or competitive soccer. His aspirations led him to the United States Marine Corps, where he enlisted even before graduating high school, exhibiting exceptional drive and determination.
He was a member of the 2nd Tank Battalion, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, when he made the ultimate sacrifice at 20 years old. Jason's family—his parents, Ron and Shelly, and his brother Ryan—continue to honor his memory through the mission of Sailing For Veterans.
"This organization was established in memory of my brother, whose selfless sacrifice guides our mission," says Ryan Burnett. "Sailing helps cultivate community, purpose, and connection, essential to healing. We strive to provide veterans with the support they need as they navigate life's challenges after service."
A Shared Mission
Co-founder George Dratelis, who serves as Executive Director, emphasizes the importance of their mission. "Teaming up with Ryan Burnett to lead this outreach is an honor. We are bound by a shared commitment to honor those who served, and we aim to provide a therapeutic escape through sailing."
Sailing For Veterans stands out for its unique approach to veteran wellness. The share experiences on the water provide a distraction from everyday stresses and encourage veterans to rediscover joy and camaraderie in life.
