Empowering Rohingya Girls' Education: Sofaida's Journey

Empowering Rohingya Girls' Education: Sofaida's Journey

Sofaida's Journey to Education

In the heart of the refugee camps, where resilience meets opportunity, Sofaida, a remarkable 14-year-old girl, is determined to change her fate. With the support of community-based learning facilities funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW), she navigates her educational path, overcoming significant challenges as a Rohingya refugee girl.

Overcoming Adversity

Sofaida arrived in Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2017. Initially, her physical disability made everyday activities daunting, especially when it came to attending classes. Relying on her father's support to navigate the camp was a daily reality, but cultural beliefs surrounding gender roles hindered her access to education as she transitioned into adolescence.

As the years passed, the COVID-19 pandemic further interrupted any chance of learning. However, hope sparkled anew when Sofaida enrolled in a community-based learning facility in 2022. "I like coming here. After enrolling, I learned poetry, word-making, my ABCs and many other things," she shared, a smile lighting up her face.

The Learning Facility Advantage

Unlike conventional learning centers, which often lack accessibility for girls in the community, these facilities provide a welcoming environment. They are uniquely designed for girls, ensuring that all classes are conducted by female teachers. This initiative reassures parents that their daughters can learn in a safe atmosphere. Consequently, more adolescent girls are now seizing the chance to learn essential skills within these nurturing spaces.

As Sofaida engaged with her studies, Humanity & Inclusion staff recognized her need for support related to her mobility. Through home visits and tailored exercises, they guided her in improving her ability to walk independently. "After doing exercises, I can now walk reasonably well," Sofaida proudly stated, illustrating her hard work and determination.

Academic and Social Growth

With her newfound independence, Sofaida now arrives at the facility each day, eager to absorb knowledge. Her enthusiasm extends to a passion for poetry, which she enjoys immensely. "Since enrolling, I have studied Burmese, English, life skills, social studies, science, math and many other things. I especially enjoy reading poetry," she remarked, speaking with excitement about her academic pursuits.

Her teacher, Kulsoma, Marveled at Sofaida's transformation. Noticing positive changes in her confidence and ability to form friendships, Kulsoma emphasized the importance of social connections. “When she feels sad, isolated, or struggles to concentrate, we provide encouragement that helps her bond with peers,” she explained. Sofaida has since formed close friendships, illustrating the community's supportive nature.

Community Impact

The ripple effects of these learning facilities are profound. Parents, including Sofaida's, have expressed gratitude for the opportunities their daughters receive. "After seeing all these improvements, they have thanked everyone involved, from Young Power in Social Action to ECW and Humanity & Inclusion," Kulsoma shared.

In the Rohingya community, pervasive cultural beliefs often restrict girls' mobility, leaving them vulnerable to systemic barriers. Parents frequently fear their daughters will face negative repercussions if they publicly pursue education or interact with boys. As such, the location and all-female staffing of the Community-Based Learning Facilities address these fears, creating a safe haven for education.

Since the influx of Rohingya refugees, ECW has tirelessly worked to partner with various stakeholders to provide supportive learning opportunities. Acknowledging the urgency of the situation, they are focused on creating holistic, safe learning environments where children can thrive.

While families like Sofaida's have found refuge in Cox's Bazar, the situation remains precarious. Access to vital services, including adequate education and health care, remains limited. Many Rohingya children still face barriers such as food insecurity and inadequate sanitation.

Sofaida's journey stands as a powerful testament to the potential that resides within every child. With additional resources and continued support from strengthening organizations, the ambition to expand learning spaces will become a reality. By investing in girls’ education, we allow them to dream, learn, and grow into empowered individuals. It is our joint responsibility to help them write their stories.
