North Carolina Community College System Promotes Entrepreneurship
The North Carolina Community College System's Small Business Center Network (SBCN) is excited to introduce the SBCN Startup Showdown, powered by Wells Fargo. This competition aims to support budding entrepreneurs with mentorship, training, and a substantial funding pool of $60,000 for startup endeavors. This initiative stands out as it draws from the largest private gift ever received by the SBCN, in collaboration with the NC Community Colleges Foundation and Wells Fargo. Together, they are committed to enhancing local economies and creating pathways for business ownership throughout the region.
Application Process and Timeline
Applications for the SBCN Startup Showdown will be open starting March 1, 2026, and will close on April 7, 2026. The program will see the selection of sixteen finalists, two from each of SBCN’s eight regions. These finalists will be chosen by late April and will part-take in an enriching four-month developmental journey. The training is set to commence in mid-May, concluding with a significant statewide pitch showcase and awards ceremony later in the year.
Finalist Training and Support
Finalists will benefit from a structured entrepreneurship training program, personalized counseling from local Small Business Center advisors, and comprehensive pitch development support. As part of this journey, participants will receive professional business planning tools and have access to up to $500 in customized consulting from industry experts. They will also complete the SBCN’s engaging eight-week online Pitch It! course and network with peers, mentors, and partners, creating a robust support system for their entrepreneurial ventures.
Inspiration Behind the Initiative
During a time when communities celebrate Small Business Saturday, Anne Shaw, State Director of the Small Business Center Network, expressed the initiative's significance. "As we honor existing small businesses, this program is an investment in aspiring entrepreneurs. The SBCN Startup Showdown equips new founders with the guidance, capital, and confidence essential for transitioning from concepts to operations, regardless of their location in North Carolina," she noted.
Funding and Awards for Entrepreneurs
The generous $60,000 funding pool will be allocated to the top three entrepreneurs, alongside the support of their respective Small Business Centers. The winners will not only receive monetary support but also a professionally produced pitch video to aid in promoting their business ideas. Moreover, they will gain statewide visibility through public voting and enjoy a one-year membership with the local Chamber of Commerce, providing further networking opportunities.
Wells Fargo's Commitment to Small Businesses
In a statement about the initiative, Suzie Koonce, Senior Consultant for Social Impact & Sustainability at Wells Fargo, highlighted the bank's enduring tradition of backing entrepreneurs. "The growth of small businesses directly correlates to community development. Therefore, we are proud to support this initiative during its inaugural year," she emphasized.
