Employee AI Literacy Disconnect in the Workplace

Employee AI Literacy Disconnect in the Workplace

Disconnect in Employee AI Literacy at Work

Slingshot, the work management platform developed by Infragistics, has published Part 1 of its two-part 2024 Digital Work Trends Report. This annual report reveals a significant gap between what managers expect from AI in the workplace and how employees actually use AI in their day-to-day tasks. While employers have primarily adopted AI to assist with initial research (62%), manage workflows (58%), and analyze data (55%), nearly two-thirds of employees (63%) report using AI mainly to verify their work.

Transforming the Workplace with AI

Dean Guida, the Founder of Slingshot, points out that the workplace is undergoing a major transformation as more companies integrate AI tools to boost efficiency and productivity. He highlights a disconnect between employers' intentions for AI and how employees are using these tools. This gap largely stems from a lack of education and training regarding AI tools among the workforce.

Training and Perceptions of AI Effectiveness

The report, based on research conducted by Dynata for Slingshot, shows that only 23% of employees feel they have received adequate education and training on AI. In contrast, 72% of employers believe their staff is sufficiently trained, yet only 53% of employees agree with this assessment. This disparity is further reflected in gender differences regarding AI training, with 66% of males feeling adequately trained compared to just 44% of females.

Highlights from the 2024 Digital Work Trends Report

The report presents several key findings:

  • Employers see AI as a productivity enhancer: More than half (60%) of employers believe that AI significantly boosts productivity, while only 44% of employees feel the same way. Notably, 10% of employees report that AI has no positive effect on their productivity.
  • Time savings reported by employees: A substantial 79% of employees indicate that AI saves them between 1-2 hours each day, with 37% claiming they save 3-4 hours. With this additional time, 63% are managing their workloads more effectively, and 54% are re-prioritizing their tasks.
  • Insufficient data readiness: Nearly half (45%) of employers recognize that their company’s data is not adequately prepared for effective AI implementation. Challenges arise from siloed data across departments, which makes AI less effective without centralized information. Furthermore, 32% of employees believe their company would be better positioned to support AI with more thorough training.

Realizing AI's Full Potential

Guida emphasizes that AI has the potential to transform workplace dynamics by enabling teams to automate routine tasks and concentrate on higher-level strategic projects. To fully leverage AI, both employers and employees need to focus on preparing their operations. This includes centralizing essential data, enhancing education around AI usage, and investing in reskilling and upskilling initiatives.
