About the Program
The Frederick Douglass–Daniel O'Connell Global Internship offers an incredible opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Ireland, learning from the rich history and cultural landscape. Sponsored by renowned organizations, this unique program is aimed at empowering young American leaders to gain impactful experiences through global engagement.
Inspiration Behind the Internship
Established in 2015, this initiative pays homage to the transformative encounter between Frederick Douglass and the distinguished Irish abolitionist Daniel O'Connell. Douglass visited Ireland during his journey advocating for freedom, where he met O'Connell, who was then a prominent figure fighting for equality and justice. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Program Details and Benefits
The Douglass–O'Connell Global Internship prepares high-achieving students for a future filled with success by blending international education with hands-on experience. Selected interns will receive comprehensive program support, including full funding, airfare, and a living stipend, ensuring they can focus fully on their enriching experience abroad.
Internship Experience
During the 8-week internship, participants will work closely with an Irish organization, gaining invaluable insights into cultural dynamics and workplace practices. The program also features an internship seminar worth six academic credits, complemented by lectures covering Irish history and culture. Interns will have the chance to network in key locations such as Dublin, Cork, and Belfast.

Scholarships and Grants
For those who apply but do not secure an internship position, CIEE offers a Douglass–O'Connell Scholars Grant worth $1,500, which can be applied towards any CIEE study abroad summer or semester program.
