Over the last decade, Hu sparked a green wave—integrating rough-and-ready saxaul trees and the medicinal powerhouse, Cistanche deserticola. It was a match made in eco-heaven.
This effort wasn’t just about trees and herbs. The endgame was about sprucing up local economies too. In 2024, sales of Cistanche products hit an impressive 80 million yuan, stimulating 1,500 short-term and 200 processing jobs for locals. What once was a dust bowl blossomed into an oasis spanning over 101,427 hectares with tree cover jumping from a measly 0.58% back in 1983 to a promising 4.67%.
"Turning cold, lifeless sand into lush forests and vibrant green lands—how could that not be worthwhile?" Hu explained, showing that heart melts even the hardest sand.
