Founded by William Van Duzer Lawrence in 1926, Sarah Lawrence College opened as New York's first two-year college for women, named in honor of his wife, Sarah Bates Lawrence. It received its provisional charter on December 9, 1926, welcoming its first students in 1928. Over the years, it transitioned into a four-year program and expanded its offerings to include groundbreaking master’s degrees, establishing itself as a trailblazer in student-centered liberal arts education.
