Celebrating Young Innovators at the Regeneron ISEF

Students from the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF) have recently showcased their talents at the 75th Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Celebrated as the world's largest and most prestigious science competition, ISEF drew in over 30 million high school students from affiliated fairs across 70 countries. Only a select group of 1,700 students earned a spot at this esteemed event, with 10 of these finalists hailing from GSDSEF.

A Showcase of Talent and Research

Sany Zakharia, a board member and treasurer of GSDSEF, led the delegation of talented young scientists who represented the region. Competing for a share of over $9 million in awards, these aspiring scientists achieved remarkable success, earning a total of seven awards, which included 2nd place, 3rd place, and two 4th place prizes, cumulatively worth approximately $46,800.

A Closer Look at the Award-Winning Projects

Among the outstanding projects presented, Hannah Im and Nupur Bhalla from Del Norte High School explored ways to mitigate academic burnout through statistical modeling. Their research emphasizes emotional intelligence as a protective factor in adolescents, earning recognition as ISEF finalists.

Another remarkable project, conducted by Saanvi Dogra, also from Del Norte High School, unveiled potential treatments for congenital heart defects. This ambitious research netted a Grand Award for a Fourth Award, amounting to $600, showcasing the innovative spirit of GSDSEF students.

Moreover, senior Anirudh Kalyanaraman presented an intriguing novel treatment aimed at addressing adverse cardiovascular effects stemming from burn pit exposure, also earning finalist honors. Fellow classmate Lilian Zeng, with her innovative project targeting antibiotic-resistant bacteria, further demonstrated the high level of research conducted by the GSDSEF entrants.

Recognition Across Various Disciplines

This year’s competition was marked by excellence across numerous disciplines. Kayley Xu from The Bishop's School brought home a Second Award of $2,400 for her wearable stethoscope array designed to localize cardiopulmonary sounds.

Del Norte High's Tarik Oguz also made an impact in Computational Biology, securing a Grand Award of $600 for research on lung cancer detection using miRNAs. Physics scholar Joe Smith from Stanford Online High School captured a Third Award, worth $1,200, for his study related to chemical tagging in the Magellanic Clouds.

In the realm of plant sciences, Anna Luo’s project examined the allelopathic effects of *Cynara cardunculus* on Coastal Sage Scrub species, earning her a special award scholarship from The New American University, valued at $32,000. The creativity of Ryan Rezaei, also from Canyon Crest Academy, shone through in his robotics project, which was honored with a special award worth $5,000.

The Significance of GSDSEF

Since its inception in 1955, the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair has served as a springboard for students to engage in independent research beyond the classroom. With an emphasis on inquiry, creativity, and innovation, GSDSEF brings together some of the brightest young minds in the region.

The fair has become a respected platform where students from around 800 middle and high schools can present their findings to a panel of over 400 professional judges. With more than $40,000 in prizes awarded, GSDSEF encourages students to pursue fruitful careers in STEM fields.

The impact of the fair has been profound, as it promotes groundbreaking research that covers a wide array of topics, from astronomy and zoology to advances in AI technologies and sustainable practices. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, GSDSEF relies on the dedication of volunteers committed to fostering scientific exploration among youth.
