Zarlasht, an Afghan writer with robust academic credentials, including a B.A. in Global Studies and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, has made an indelible mark with her compelling storytelling. Her application stood out among a record 526 submissions, leading to her selection as the Writer-in-Residence. Her proposed work, UNFURLING, will delve into the lives of Afghan American teens Yasaman and Zubair, exploring critical themes such as identity, Islamophobia, and sibling dynamics in rural Wisconsin. This narrative promises to resonate deeply with many readers.
Program Support and Stipend Details
Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor, Zarlasht will receive not just the increased stipend but also an additional $2,500 allocated for editing and coaching. This supportive framework sets the stage for Zarlasht to create a significant body of work during her residency.
