Long Beach City College (LBCC) has proudly announced that Carolyn Castaño, who serves as the Co-Department Head of Visual & Media Arts and a distinguished Professor of Drawing and Painting, is the recipient of the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for this year. The Guggenheim Fellowships have been awarded since 1925 to support individuals showing extraordinary talent across various fields. Each selected Fellow is granted financial assistance, with awards of up to $90,000 available to facilitate independent work under optimal conditions. Within this latest batch of Fellows, which includes 198 distinguished individuals across 53 disciplines, Professor Castaño stands out as one of only 32 recipients recognized in Fine Arts, selected from a competitive pool of nearly 3,500 applicants.

Professor Castaño, a Colombian-American visual artist based in Los Angeles, is known for her profound impact on the arts. Her work encompasses painting, drawing, video, and mixed-media installations that often reflect themes from Latin and South America. Each piece she creates serves as a conduit to explore vital topics such as landscape, migration, female identity, and family fabric, frequently employing eco-feminist perspectives. Her artwork has been showcased not only locally but also nationally and internationally, skillfully blending drawing, photography, and performance with the intricate patterns found in textiles and geometric abstraction.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master’s in Fine Arts from UCLA’s School of Art and Architecture.
