Once he graduated in 1969, Doug underwent pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. He was later stationed with the Strategic Air Command Air Refueling Squadron at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California. During the Vietnam War, he performed six months of missions in Southeast Asia, earning the prestigious Air Medal for his bravery and service. Meanwhile, Doug also pursued graduate studies in International Relations at the University of Southern California to further enhance his academic credentials.

In 1975, Doug left military service behind and embraced a dynamic career in finance and insurance. He holds both the CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations, along with a Series 6 Securities license.
