Alliance Witan PLC (“Alliance Witan” or the “Company”) has made a significant update to its investment portfolio. The investment manager, Willis Towers Watson (“WTW”), has appointed Jennison Associates (“Jennison”) to manage a portion of its multi-manager global equity portfolio, marking an important expansion in its investment approach.
Founded in 1969, New York and Boston-based Jennison is known for its expertise in investing in rapidly growing companies. As of mid-2024, Jennison manages an impressive $210 billion in assets. Previously, Jennison played a role in managing a share of Witan Investment Trust’s portfolio, before it melded with Alliance Trust plc to form Alliance Witan.
With Jennison now managing around 5% of the Company’s portfolio, much of this allocation comes from stocks they previously supervised within Witan. Following the merger, the balance of Witan’s portfolio has mostly moved under the guidance of BlackRock, which is currently overseeing the transition and realignment of the assets. Notably, two managers—Veritas Asset Management and GQG Partners—remain involved across both platforms, leading to selective in-specie transfers of stock that will continue to be retained.
The transition will not alter the portfolio’s overarching risk profile. It is designed to mirror the balance held in the Alliance Trust portfolio before the merger. The multi-manager strategy remains intact, and the management team is committed to ensuring that there are no significant biases in terms of regions, investment styles, or sectors. Instead, the focus is placed on enhancing value through precise stock selection, with detailed allocation plans to be shared in forthcoming communications.
Investment Philosophy and Strategy
Craig Baker, Chief Investment Officer of WTW and Chair of the Alliance Witan Investment Committee, commented: "Jennison has consistently ranked among our most trusted managers. Their expertise will augment our exposure to growth stocks, and due to the merger with Witan, we can integrate them with minimal transaction costs.”
By bringing Jennison on board, Alliance Witan aims at fortifying its position in the investment landscape. This strategic partnership aligns with the broader goals of providing superior returns to shareholders while leveraging Jennison’s proficiency in identifying growth opportunities within the equity market.
Future Outlook for Alliance Witan
As Alliance Witan continues to evolve, its focus will remain steadfast on delivering value to investors through an enhanced investment model that includes a range of managers with distinctive strategies. The involvement of multiple stock pickers not only diversifies the investment portfolio but also allows for a robust analysis of market opportunities.
Investors can expect periodic updates on the compositions and performances of the various portfolios managed under the Alliance Witan umbrella. The proactive approach to investment management is designed to navigate the complexities of the global market while prioritizing shareholder interests.
