AGCO Foundation and University of Sydney Collaborate on Rural Resilience

AGCO Foundation Partners with the University of Sydney for Rural Development

The AU$150,000 partnership aims to establish a dedicated agriculture program at the university, focusing on enhancing support for rural communities.

Strengthening Economic Resilience through Education

AGCO Foundation, committed to transforming farming communities, has collaborated with the University of Sydney’s Business School. The partnership seeks to expand the Remote and Rural Enterprise (RARE) program by adding an agricultural stream. This initiative is designed to bolster economic resilience across Australia by engaging students in community-centered, place-based projects.

Addressing the Challenges in Rural Areas

Over the past five decades, a significant portion of Australia’s rural and agricultural communities has been affected by economic downturns due to population declines and a lack of employment variety. Family farms and small agricultural enterprises, which play a crucial role in these communities, face numerous challenges. Geographic isolation, climate change, and limited market access pose barriers to sustainability and growth.

Implementing Targeted Interventions

The agriculture stream will focus on practical interventions that promote social enterprise development, agricultural tourism, and sustainability initiatives. Each year, between 50 and 70 students will engage in community-based action research, collaborating with local entrepreneurs and Indigenous-led organizations to develop solutions that enhance agricultural resilience and spur economic growth.

Building Local Ecosystems through Education

Roger Batkin, Board Chair of the AGCO Foundation, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "Our collaboration with the University of Sydney aligns with our vision to foster vibrant local ecosystems. This initiative keeps future leaders connected to local agriculture while enabling the sharing of intergenerational knowledge, driving innovations and best practices necessary for sustainable transformation and economic viability."

Long-term Impact with the RARE Program

This RARE program was launched back in 2007 and has successfully connected students with local businesses to develop practical solutions that support sustainability and growth. By leveraging the university’s rural campuses in Camden and Narrabri, the agriculture stream aims to create lasting impacts and cultivate long-term partnerships.

Empowering Local Enterprises

Professor Leisa Sargent, Dean of the University of Sydney Business School, spoke about the significance of this initiative as a reflection of the School's dedication to providing transformational educational experiences and impactful partnerships. "We are excited to team up with the AGCO Foundation to empower local enterprises while providing students with valuable, hands-on experience. This collaboration aims to create sustainable solutions that respect cultural contexts and promote intergenerational knowledge sharing," she stated.

Support for Agricultural Enterprises

Throughout the two-year collaboration, three agricultural enterprises will benefit from customized strategic assistance, mentorship, and initial funding. Additionally, RARE will provide opportunities for AGCO Foundation stakeholders to engage through guest lectures, mentorship, panel discussions, and community events, facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration between industry and academia.
