Afrimat Expands into Hemp-Building Sector: A Sustainable Move

Afrimat Expands into Hemp-Building Sector: A Sustainable Move

Afrimat Expands into Hemp-Building Sector: A Sustainable Move

Afrimat (AFTLF) is well-known for its operations that span multiple areas, including lime, iron ore, anthracite, and manganese. Recently, the company has made an intriguing foray into the hemp industry through a partnership with the legacy brand Hemporium.

This collaboration involves the use of hemp-based materials to expand a building project in a city renowned for its vibrant culture. This development has sparked discussions about whether Afrimat is genuinely committed to fostering the future of hemp in South Africa or if it is merely a publicity endeavor.

The timing of this investment aligns with South Africa's enhanced focus on the hemp sector, as the government recently issued numerous permits for hemp cultivation as part of a strategic initiative under a new legislative framework.

Afrimat's entry into this field could be pivotal, potentially providing essential capital that could help the nascent hemp industry to flourish.

Afrimat's Green Transition

The journey that Afrimat has embarked on with Hemporium is also a clear statement about the company's values, particularly regarding sustainability.

Afrimat is not just about mining; it has also committed to renewable energy projects, finding innovative ways to recycle mining by-products, and undertaking rehabilitation efforts for mined areas through initiatives like reforestation and water conservation.

The mining sector is notorious for its negative environmental consequences. For instance, iron ore extraction can severely impact water quality due to the increased sediment levels and metallic runoff, while the clearing of land for mining drastically affects biodiversity.

Limestone operations contribute similarly to environmental damage, disrupting land use and generating dust and noise that can negatively affect surrounding ecosystems and human populations.

The Benefits of Hemp Building Materials

The innovative hemp-lime block technology being employed in this city not only represents a modern construction approach but also presents an eco-friendly alternative that could change the landscape of the industry.

Afrimat Hemp, a subsidiary of Afrimat, is on the verge of completing a substantial seven-story addition to an existing five-story structure. The newly constructed building will feature hemp blocks that are 28 cm thick, elevating the building's height to a total of 12 stories.

This new space will house Hemporium's flagship retail outlet, featuring a range of products from hemp-derived clothing to skincare and CBD items. Additionally, it will include a steak restaurant and accommodations offering 50 hotel rooms.

Innovative Building Solutions with Hempcrete

The structure's walls are constructed from hempcrete blocks made by Afrimat Hemp, utilizing a mixture of European hemp hurd and locally sourced lime, boasting impressive fire-resistance properties, enduring flames for up to 135 minutes.

This building is also equipped with several sustainability features. It showcases solar panels, smart metering technology, an underground borehole with a filtration system for backup water supply, and a thermally activated building system, designed to maintain comfortable temperatures without relying on conventional heating or cooling systems.

The Process of Making Hempcrete

Hempcrete is a unique, sustainable building material derived from hemp. The process starts with harvesting the stalks of the hemp plant, which are then left to decompose naturally for about 10 to 14 days. This breakdown helps to separate the outer fibers from the inner core, known as hemp hurd, which is the key component of the construction material.

Following this, the stalks are processed to extract the fiber, while the hurd gets chopped into small, usable pieces. After cleaning the hurd to eliminate dust and impurities, it is mixed with lime and water—generally in a ratio of three parts hemp, one part lime, and one part water, depending on the specific requirements of each project.

This mixture can be molded into blocks or panels for construction. In larger projects, the mix might be poured directly into molds to create substantial wall sections, thus simplifying the building process.

One significant advantage of hempcrete is its lightweight nature, making it 50% lighter than traditional concrete while also providing superior insulation, thus embodying a user-friendly and eco-conscious building solution.
