Addressing AI Agent Risks: Key Insights from NeuralTrust Survey

Addressing AI Agent Risks: Key Insights from NeuralTrust Survey

Understanding the Landscape of AI Agent Security

NeuralTrust has released significant survey results that illuminate how security leaders are adapting to the challenges posed by autonomous AI systems and the emerging field of Agentic Security.

Current Concerns of Security Leaders

A recent survey reveals that a substantial 73% of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) express grave concerns regarding AI agent risks. Paradoxically, only 30% of these leaders have developed comprehensive safeguards to address these vulnerabilities. This data highlights a troubling gap between the rapid integration of AI technologies into enterprises and the security measures required to protect them.

Insights from the Survey

The report, titled The State of AI Agent Security 2026, is based on feedback from over 160 CISOs and security experts around the globe. It shows that many organizations are adopting AI agents at a pace that outstrips their ability to secure them effectively. The maturity model developed by NeuralTrust categorizes 46% of businesses as Reactively prepared, 29% as Managed, while fewer than 10% have achieved Proactive governance.

Joan Vendrell, Co-Founder and CEO of NeuralTrust, notes, "AI agents are becoming integral to business operations, but the respective security controls are lagging behind in development. Our findings indicate that Agentic Security stands as one of the most pressing and complex challenges facing cybersecurity today."

Real Incidents of AI Agent Security Breaches

The survey uncovered that 20% of organizations have already faced AI agent-related security breaches. These incidents are often due to prompt injection and data exposure. Among these affected organizations, 40% have reported financial losses ranging from $1 million to $10 million, while 13% foresee losses that exceed $10 million, which parallels the impact seen in large-scale ransomware attacks.

Key Findings of the Survey

The survey points out that most companies still depend on traditional security measures that were not designed with autonomous systems in mind. Although visibility regarding these risks is improving, the overall control remains limited. Here are some of the findings:

  • 42% actively monitor AI behavior through activity monitoring,
  • 38% use access control strategies to limit permissions,
  • 31% employ data loss prevention tools for safeguarding sensitive information,
  • Only 19% conduct adversarial testing to simulate real attack scenarios,
  • A mere 16% validate their AI supply chain to identify potential risks.

Alarmingly, 25% of organizations lack any AI-specific controls, indicating that many teams are still unprepared for the transition from human-operated systems to autonomous AI agents.

Future of AI Agent Security

Looking ahead, by 2028, it is estimated that one out of every three enterprises will manage over 500 AI agents, and by 2030, that number will exceed half of all enterprises. Concurrently, 80% of organizations will be subject to AI-specific regulations, and a majority will likely employ dedicated AI security specialists. This transition underscores the growing importance of Agentic Security as a foundational element of enterprise trust.

About the Report

The State of AI Agent Security 2026 is a global study conducted by NeuralTrust, which collected responses from CISOs, Chief Data Officers, and security executives across various regions, including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The research delves into how organizations are securing, overseeing, and managing AI agents as their adoption grows and regulation tightens.

The next phase of AI integration won’t solely be defined by its velocity but by the trust established through robust security measures. Agentic Security is emerging as the critical discipline that will empower organizations to utilize autonomy responsibly and confidently.
