8 Things You Need to Understand as a Newbie Investor

8 Things You Need to Understand as a Newbie Investor

Over the past few years, investing has taken the Philippines by storm. Thanks to the widespread adoption of stock trading apps and digital savings products, Filipinos of all income levels are jumping in, eager to grow their money faster in these economically challenging times.

The surge may not have seemed easy to predict a generation ago, but it does make sense. Filipinos are more digitally and financially literate than ever, and this has empowered them to take steps to combat inflation and wider economic uncertainty. Social media, in particular, has also played its part, turning investing into an accessible trend.

Still, the relative novelty of investment and the speed of adoption have come with some risk. Not all investment advice online is sound, and it’s easy to get swept up by hype if you don’t know what you’re looking at. That’s precisely why arming yourself with a solid foundation is key to safe, long-term investing. Here are some of the essential learnings you need to know as a newbie investor in the Philippines:

1) Try a Time Deposit First

Sure, time deposits are not hyped the same way as the hottest stocks or crypto coins are. But they do bring with them certainty, and they can be a good start for new investors just learning the ropes.

If you’re not familiar, a time deposit account requires you to lock in your money for a set period, in exchange for a higher interest rate compared to a typical savings account. Traditionally, these products were fully locked in, but products like Maya Time Deposit Plus allow top-ups, making it easier to build your fund gradually. The bigger benefit of using a time deposit account is that it will also train you to avoid impulsive withdrawals, a mindset that will serve you well for all types of investing.

2) Start Now

Thanks to the principle of compounding interest, one peso saved today is likely going to be worth more than one peso saved years from now. Whether you’re using a time deposit or investment fund, an earlier start will almost certainly mean a greater long-term impact.

3) Risk and Reward Always Go Hand in Hand

High returns usually come with higher risks. Safer instruments like time deposits and bonds offer stability but smaller gains, while your exposure in stocks, mutual funds, or crypto must be timed correctly, since these can swing widely in value. There’s no “better” or “worse” approach, but you need to decide how much money and risk you’re willing to commit before you invest.

4) Diversification Protects You from Volatility

Spreading your money across different products is a time-tested strategy for mitigating risk. The keyword is “mitigate.” Diversification doesn’t eliminate risk entirely, but it does make it so that your financial journey has fewer sharp ups and downs.

5) Emergency Funds Come First

Before you start investing large chunks of cash, make sure you’ve set aside 3–6 months’ worth of living expenses in an easily accessible savings account. This safety net keeps you from having to sell your investments at a bad time, such as during a job transition, just to cover unexpected expenses. If you choose a high-interest savings account, then your emergency fund can also beat inflation and grow in value alongside the rest of your portfolio.

6) Different Goals Need Different Tools

Buying a car in two years and saving for retirement in 30 years demand completely different levels of commitment. For short-term targets, safer products like time deposits or high-interest savings accounts make a lot more sense. Longer horizons might require investments with higher growth potential, such as stocks or mutual funds, since you’ll need to maintain a good baseline growth and the ability to safely ride out short-term market volatility.

7) Beware of Anything that Sounds “Too Good to Be True”

There are thousands of “gurus” out there, and most of them probably do not have your specific interest in mind. They might have good advice sometimes, but it’s crucial to be skeptical, especially when they guarantee high returns with little or no risk. When someone pushes something that goes against conventional wisdom, chances are they’re pushing a scam.

8) Learn to Understand and Control Your Emotions

It’s natural to feel excited or anxious when prices climb or dip. However, chasing trends when everyone is buying, or panicking when values fall, is probably going to severely compromise your ability to build wealth steadily. As the saying goes, “time in market beats timing the market.” Stay disciplined and stick to your plan, and the rest should follow in time.

The Power of Habit-Driven Investing

Thanks to tools like time deposits and digital savings apps, most of us already have accessible ways to start building our wealth. In many cases, these apps also provide a means to access investment funds and even cryptocurrency trading networks, expanding our options even further.

The tools are there, but the real challenge lies in developing the right habits. The only one who can really teach you patience and a willingness to learn is yourself.

If nothing else, you want to forget about becoming rich overnight. If it happens, it happens. The more realistic goal is to grow steadily and sustainably. Once you have the fundamentals down, you can safely increase your exposure and begin investing with more confidence.
