3 Key Reasons to Consider Investing in General Motors

3 Key Reasons to Consider Investing in General Motors

General Motors: An Underrated Player in the Automotive Industry

General Motors (NYSE: GM) often gets overshadowed by niche electric vehicle stocks, but I see it as not only an affordable investment option but also potentially the most underrated choice for those looking to invest in electric and autonomous vehicles. Here are three compelling reasons why General Motors is a key part of my portfolio, and why I plan to increase my investment in the future.

Significant EV and Autonomous Vehicle Potential

While GM's traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks and SUVs continue to drive strong profits, the company is just beginning to roll out its electric vehicle (EV) strategy. The progress so far has been impressive, highlighted by the successful launches of models like the Hummer EV, Chevy Silverado EV, and Cadillac Lyric SUV. In the last quarter alone, GM delivered 22,000 electric vehicles, marking a 40% increase compared to the previous year, and boosting its market share by 2.2 percentage points.

With several new models set to hit dealerships soon, there is significant potential for long-term growth. Moreover, GM's autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Cruise, has recently partnered with Uber to create a driverless rideshare service, and Cruise vehicles are actively being tested on the roads in various urban areas.

Remarkably Low Valuation

General Motors is currently trading at an exceptionally low valuation, with a price-to-earnings ratio of just 5.5 times its trailing earnings and under 5 times the projected earnings for the next twelve months. Despite consistently exceeding profit expectations, the market seems to lack confidence in GM’s ability to maintain or grow its profitability.

This low valuation is surprising given GM's impressive profitability. The company achieved its best quarterly sales in over three years recently, all while maintaining pricing power that exceeds the industry average, generating $5.3 billion in automotive free cash flow during this period.

Robust Stock Buyback Program

Management clearly believes that General Motors stock is undervalued, as demonstrated by a substantial stock buyback initiative. Recently, GM announced an accelerated buyback program worth $10 billion, which has led to an impressive 18% reduction in outstanding shares in just one year.

Additionally, a further buyback plan valued at $6 billion was approved in June, with the goal of reducing outstanding shares to below 1 billion, down from approximately 1.14 billion.

When executed wisely, buybacks can significantly boost earnings-per-share growth and create substantial long-term value, especially when shares are repurchased at prices below their intrinsic value.

A Strong Company in the Early Stages of a Major Transition

While there is great potential, investing in General Motors does come with risks. The automotive industry is cyclical, meaning that sales and profits can sharply decline during economic downturns. Additionally, GM operates a large financing division with around $121 billion in outstanding loans, which brings additional credit risks.

Nevertheless, General Motors stands out for its strong management and significant potential, justifying its low valuation. If the company can successfully implement its electric vehicle strategy while continuing to profit from its ICE operations, there is considerable upside for patient investors.

Should You Invest $1,000 in General Motors Right Now?

Before deciding to invest in General Motors, it’s important to consider the current market landscape. GM is solidly positioned within the automotive sector, leveraging its established brand and advancements in EV technology.
