TotalEnergies Celebrates Milestone in CO2 Storage Technology
TotalEnergies Marks Major Milestone in Carbon Capture
PARIS--Regulatory News:
TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) together with its partners, Equinor and Shell, proudly announces the completion of the CO2 receiving and storage facilities under the Northern Lights Joint-Venture initiative in Norway. This state-of-the-art facility includes a terminal designed for receiving CO2 cargoes, a 100 km subsea pipeline for transporting CO2 to an offshore storage site, and subsea injection mechanisms for secure and permanent CO2 storage at depths of 2,600 meters below the seabed.
Preparation for European CO2 Storage
Northern Lights is now fully equipped and prepared to receive and store CO2 emissions from various European industries. The first injection of CO2 is anticipated to take place in 2025. This project underscores the importance of developing CO2 transportation and storage services as key strategies to effectively reduce emissions and provide a viable decarbonization route for European industry.
World’s First Commercial CO2 Transportation Project
This extraordinary venture marks Northern Lights as the world’s first commercial CO2 transportation and storage project. The maiden phase of the operation, supported by the Norwegian government, boasts a capacity of 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year, with all available slots already booked by customers across Norway and the broader European continent. Plans are underway for a second phase to expand capacity to over 5 million tons of CO2 annually.
Significant Endorsements from Leadership
During the recent inauguration ceremony, Norwegian Minister of Energy, Terje Aasland, expressed his pride, stating, “Today’s ceremony marks a significant milestone, one that fills us with great pride and hope for the future. This is a proud moment not just for Northern Lights as a company but for Norway and the advancement of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) worldwide.”
Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the completion of the facilities has placed Norway at the forefront of global CCS efforts. He shared, “Today we achieved an important milestone on our journey to demonstrate CCS as a viable option to help achieve climate goals.” Since inception, Northern Lights has welcomed over 10,000 visitors from more than 50 countries, demonstrating global interest in the vital technologies being developed.
Looking Ahead to a Greener Future
Arnaud Le Foll, Senior Vice-President of New Business - Carbon Neutrality at TotalEnergies, highlighted the partnership’s journey and said, “We are proud to celebrate today the commissioning of the Northern Lights facilities. It has been a long journey since our partnership was established in 2017, and we look forward to receiving the first volumes from hard-to-abate emitters in 2025.” This landmark achievement represents a pivotal step towards the decarbonization of the European industrial landscape.
Collaboration Across the Industry
Grete Tveit, Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions at Equinor, remarked, “This is an exciting day for both Equinor and our partners. Northern Lights is now complete and ready to receive CO2. It signifies an important milestone in establishing a robust carbon capture and storage value chain in Europe.”
In a similar vein, Anna Mascolo, Executive Vice President of Shell Low Carbon Solutions, emphasized that “Carbon capture and storage has a vital role in helping society achieve the Paris Agreement goals.” She highlighted the significance of CCS as a crucial tool on the path toward decarbonization, especially in sectors that face challenges in reducing emissions.
The Northern Lights Project Overview
About Northern Lights: Owned equally by TotalEnergies, Equinor, and Shell, Northern Lights is pioneering the world’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. The service facilitates mitigation of unavoidable industrial emissions while accelerating decarbonization across Europe. With over 25 years of experience in CO2 storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, Northern Lights leads in the advancement of CCS technologies. The project involves transporting liquefied CO2 from industrial capture sites to an onshore terminal, followed by a pipeline for permanent underground storage.
About TotalEnergies and Carbon Storage: TotalEnergies emphasizes a two-pronged approach of first avoiding emissions and second reducing them through the deployment of the best available technologies. For residual emissions, the company is working on significant industrial carbon storage projects, enhancing European businesses' decarbonization through initiatives like Northern Lights.
