Santa Clara University Celebrates Diverse Class of 2028
Welcoming a New Era at Santa Clara University
Santa Clara University joyfully celebrated the arrival of over 1,800 new undergraduate students during a vibrant Welcome Weekend filled with fun and enriching activities. From an invigorating dance party to a heartfelt welcome liturgy, the university showcased its commitment to creating an inclusive environment where students from different backgrounds can connect and thrive.
Introducing the Class of 2028
The Class of 2028 represents the second-largest cohort in the history of Santa Clara University, comprising a diverse group of 1,612 Broncos from 46 different states and 30 countries. Additionally, 212 transfer students have chosen to enrich the university community, coming from a breadth of 140 different institutions, including 60 community colleges.
During the Welcome Weekend, President Julie Sullivan addressed the newcomers, highlighting their unique talents, kindness, and diverse perspectives. She encouraged students to broaden their horizons and embrace the experiences that their peers bring to the table.
Academic Excellence Among New Students
Santa Clara's newest students arrive with impressive academic accomplishments, boasting an average unweighted GPA of 3.7, complemented by rigorous coursework. The most popular majors chosen by these students include computer science and engineering, finance, psychology, biology, and marketing. In terms of academic distribution, 46% of the class will study in the College of Arts and Sciences, 31% in the Leavey School of Business, and 23% in the School of Engineering.
Notable Class Characteristics
This new class has several notable features that highlight the university's commitment to diversity:
- Selected from a record pool of 18,940 applicants.
- 18% of the students are first-generation college attendees.
- 17% qualify for federal Pell Grants, marking the highest percentage yet.
- 21% of students identify as Latiné/x, the highest in a first-year class.
- 54% identify as persons of color, reflecting a truly diverse community.
- 7% are international students.
- 230 students are joining as LEAD Scholars, supporting first-generation college attendees.
Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
According to Eva Blanco Masias, Vice President for Enrollment Management, Santa Clara University aims to cultivate a campus that reflects a wide spectrum of socioeconomic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. This commitment is embodied in the robust academic profiles of the students and their dedication to values such as sustainability and social justice.
National Changes and Their Impact
This class marks the first admissions cycle impacted by a significant Supreme Court decision regarding race in admissions processes, alongside challenges in federal financial-aid calculations. This context likely contributed to a decline in the percentage of Black students in the Class of 2028, which has decreased to 3.7% from 7.5% the previous year. Nevertheless, the university remains steadfast in its commitment to reach out and engage with underrepresented communities.
“The inclusivity and diversity within our recruitment efforts are integral in positioning Santa Clara as a beacon of opportunity for all students,” added Blanco Masias.
Proactive Outreach and Initiatives
Santa Clara University has initiated various outreach strategies designed to support marginalized students. Significant initiatives include:
- Launching the CA Private College is Possible initiative to provide essential resources for independent college applications.
- Forming a partnership with the Posse Foundation to offer full scholarships for exceptional student leaders from diverse backgrounds within Los Angeles.
- Joining the American Talent Initiative, aimed at enrolling and supporting 50,000 additional talented low-income students by 2025.
- Expanding transfer admission agreements with 43 community colleges, enhancing access for potential students.
Enhancing Financial Support
Continuing to emphasize financial assistance, SCU announced that starting with the Class of 2029, full demonstrated financial need will be met for incoming first-year students who qualify for Cal Grants or are admitted from Cristo Rey Network high schools. This new commitment, known as the California Promise and Cristo Rey Promise, aims to relieve the financial burden for more low- and middle-income families, making quality Jesuit education more accessible.
Ongoing Growth and Impact
Santa Clara University recently completed its largest-ever fundraising campaign, Innovating with a Mission, which raised $280 million for scholarships. The ongoing strategic plan, Impact 2030, aims to gather an additional $500 million for enhancing scholarship opportunities.
