Fiber Broadband Association Launches New Workforce Program
Fiber Broadband Association Introduces OpTIC Path Program
In an effort to tackle pressing workforce challenges, the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) has launched the OpTIC Path Membership Bundle. This new initiative merges FBA membership with its Optical Telecom Installer Certification program, creating a valuable resource for organizations dedicated to workforce development and training.
The Importance of Workforce Development
Today, the broadband market faces a significant hurdle—workforce development. A recent study indicated that the current influx of broadband funding necessitates a substantial increase in engineering and construction activities to meet deployment goals. The report highlighted an alarming need to recruit and train nearly 180,000 workers over the next decade to realize the ambitious broadband initiatives that federal and state governments are financing.
Understanding the OpTIC Path Program
The OpTIC Path program serves as a comprehensive training solution designed to cultivate skilled fiber optic technicians essential to the telecommunications sector. Participants will gain expertise in designing, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks. Currently, the FBA is collaborating with 40 states, 44 service providers, and over 70 educational institutions to implement this vital training program. The initiative aims to produce approximately 1,200 new fiber technicians annually over the next five years as the demand for skilled labor escalates.
Leaders Speak on the Initiative
"It is crucial for the fiber broadband industry to actively confront the looming workforce deficit. This membership bundle paves a way for easy access to training resources, certifications, and safety practices that will equip technicians with the credentials needed for employment," stated Deborah Kish, Vice President of Research and Workforce Development at the Fiber Broadband Association.
Jennifer Vassil, Director of Membership at FBA, added, "Adapting our membership offerings to meet the evolving industry demands is a priority for us. The OpTIC Path program is a strategic move to help broadband companies train and recruit the technicians they urgently need. By launching this membership bundle, we are empowering those responsible for developing networks and connecting communities with the tools they need to improve the workforce."
