Boosting Aluminium Can Recycling Efforts Through Global Alliance
Global Beverage Can Circularity Alliance Aims for Higher Recycling Rates
At Climate Week NYC, the Global Beverage Can Circularity Alliance is unveiling a dynamic advocacy plan focused on significantly increasing aluminium can recycling around the world. This initiative is rooted in a commitment to creating sustainable solutions through investments and improving deposit return systems that reduce the attractiveness of landfilling.
Designed for Impact: A Global Advocacy Strategy
Developed with insights from Roland Berger, the Alliance's comprehensive plan outlines essential actions, investments, and policies needed to enhance recycling metrics across 140 countries. The research indicates that nations such as Colombia, Uganda, and Vietnam could achieve impressive recycling rates of up to 90% and even near 100% can-to-can recycling within a decade by bolstering their informal recycling sectors.
Taking Action on Waste Management
Countries like the United States, UAE, Turkey, and Malaysia have the potential to improve their recycling rates by 20 percentage points by 2030. Strategies include incentivizing collection through source separation and addressing logistical challenges in recycling. Meanwhile, countries such as the UK, South Korea, Japan, and Spain show promising parallels with key stakeholders eager to support the implementation of Deposit Return Systems, further driving can recycling efforts.
The Broader Economic Benefits of Recycling
The Alliance's plan highlights the wider economic benefits of boosting recycling efforts. For instance, if aluminium beverage cans currently sent to landfills in the United States were recycled, it could offset approximately 18% of the country's total aluminium imports. In Florida, the second-largest consumer of aluminium cans, a staggering 79% of these cans end up in landfills, representing a missed opportunity for recycling. Additionally, it's noteworthy that 46% of used beverage cans in Vietnam are currently exported for non-can-to-can recycling, while a voluntary DRS in the UAE has shown promising results in managing system costs effectively.
Key Aspects of the Alliance's Approach
Among the strategic elements of the Alliance's initiative are:
- Establishing effective international diplomacy focused on recycling advocacy
- Encouraging companies to explore investment opportunities within recycling infrastructure
- Enhancing data collection, establishing recycling targets, and enacting sound policies
- Providing support for countries considering DRS, Extended Producer Responsibility, and other beneficial policies.
Events and Future Commitment
Supported by notable organizations like the Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute, and International Aluminium Institute, the Alliance will hold an international strategy event during Climate Week NYC to explore pathways towards a near-100% recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans by 2050. Each Alliance member company has pledged to declare at least one investment aimed at achieving these significant recycling targets by the next major climate conference.
Since its formation during COP28, the Alliance has urged national governments to adopt appropriate policies to reach a global recycling target of at least 80% by 2030 and aim for 100% by 2050. Current member companies include Ardagh Metal Packaging, Ball Corporation, CANPACK Group, Constellium, CROWN Holdings, Elval, Emirates Global Aluminium, Novelis, Speira, and UACJ.
