Electricity Industry Market Report 2013
M2 - Mon Nov 25, 2:43AM CST
Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/3kq66v/electricity) has announced the addition of the "Electricity Industry Market Report 2013" report to their offering. This Market Update analyses the UK electricity market, covering the four main elements of the industry: generation; transmission; distribution and supply. Electricity generation is achieved through the conversion of fuels, such as coal, natural gas, petroleum, wind power, hydro and solar power, and nuclear energy. After being generated, electricity is transported across the country through the process of transmission. Electricity is then carried from the transmission systems and generators that are connected to the distribution system to industrial, commercial and domestic users. In volume terms, demand for electricity in the UK has fallen by 6.1% over the period between 2008 and 2012, with the most significant decline being recorded in 2009. The domestic sector was the most important consumer of electricity, accounting for over a third of the total volume consumption in 2012. Among industrial sectors, the chemical industry is the largest consumer, accounting for just over a sixth of total electricity consumption by industrial sectors. By value, total electricity sales exhibited growth of 4.8% over the 5-year period; domestic sales also remained the most important sector for the UK electricity market in value terms. Value growth in electricity sales in the domestic sector continued, for the most part, throughout the review period, despite the fact the volume of energy consumption by the domestic sector has fallen over the review period as a result of rising global fuel prices in recent years. After the domestic sector, the commercial sector accounted for the next largest share of sales of electricity, followed by the industrial sector. The EU Renewable Energy Directive, published in April 2009, requires EU member states to use renewable sources to produce energy to cover a certain proportion of their energy consumption levels. In the UK, the Directive set a target of deriving 15% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. The UK Government published the Renewable Energy Roadmap in July 2011, which set out the plan for increasing the deployment and use of renewable energy to help achieve this aim. The use of renewable energy for electricity generation has consequently been rising. Apart from the increased adoption of renewable sources, other measures, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), have also been introduced to help reduce carbon emissions. As demand for electricity continues, Key Note expects that the long-term plan to reduce carbon emissions in the UK and the EU will help to ensure more renewable sources are used for electricity generation in the UK in the near future.
